With our toes dipping in the medal pool after 48 years, it time to revamp the 1993 the Sports Foreign Talent Scheme.

After the 2 shot putters from China who well and truly screwed us, let us cut thru the chase of pretending to nuture sports and do what we did with Feng in table tennis.

She was spotted in the Japanese league at the age of 19 less than 20 months ago. A deal was offered and within a year, in Jan 08 she was offered Singapore Citizenship. Within 8 months she secured a minimum silver and Singapore's first olympics medal in 48 years and second olympics medal in our history - all in 20 mths. No one heard of her 2 years ago, she never came to Singapore until 2 years ago and now she is our darling.

So lets cut the crap about nurturing anything and lets open the programme to the world. Why not let PSC offer the Olympic Medal Scholarship Programme every 2 years before the Olympics. As sportsmen and women taken in totallity are unlikely to shift the racial quota, lets bring in the best talent may they be Africans, Americans, Europeans, Asians or Australians.

Get DBS to sponsor Table tennis, SIA sailing, Capitaland athletics etc. Feng has proved the formula works. Hell the US, Georgia, the scandanavians are doing it why not us.

Earlier this year the International Table Tennis Federation passed a new 'nationality' ruling for world title events, which has yet to be adopted by the International Olympic Committee.

The ITTF ruling requires players under the age of 15 to wait three years before being eligible to compete for their new country; players between 15 and 18 years of age must wait five years and players aged 18 years to 21 years must wait seven years. Players over the age of 21 at the time they emigrate will not be allowed to register to play for the adopted countries.

The new rule is being 'grandfathered' in, so it will not affect players like Li who are currently registered to play for their new country. However, as these athletes retire, and if the IOC adopts the nationality rule for the London 2012 Olympics Games, the composition and the fortunes of many countries' teams could change dramatically.

Feng may not be able to represent S'pore in the next Olympics in London.
