The Singapore Court of Appeal recently changed the law on medical negligence in Singapore to reflect the shift in the doctor-patient relationship to a more collaborative one with patient autonomy given greater importance. In a separate decision, also inspired by patient autonomy, the Court recognised a new claim for loss of “genetic affinity” following an IVF mix-up. The 2016 SMC’s Ethical Code and Ethical Guidelines also emphasises patint autonomy. This talk is designed to help medical practitioners understand the legal relevance of patient autonomy and to catalyse ideas on how practitioners can rethink their engagement with patients and students.
