Dear TRE,
I dropped by Whitesands Shopping Mall in Pasir Ris today for my dinner at the
foodcourt located at level 3. Sadly, I witnessed a disturbing incident and I am
rather appalled by it. Here’s my account.
If I’m not mistaken, the mall management engaged a cleaning agency to provide
cleaning services to the foodcourt there. The cleaners deployed are mostly local
senior citizens with perhaps a few foreigners to make up for the numbers. There
is however one particular foreign cleaner, presumably a PRC judging from the
accent, who displayed a considerable lack of professionalism in my opinion.
Looking at his attire alone, I’m going to have to assume he’s a supervisor or
someone holding an authority over the other cleaners there. Apparently, I
noticed he is verbally abrasive towards the local elderly cleaners often chiding
them loudly in full view of the foodcourt crowd.
I can’t help but to register the very prejudiced tone this PRC cleaner
directs to the poor elderly cleaners with messages somewhat reflecting
anti-Singaporean views. Irrespective of the context surrounding the displeasure
from the PRC cleaner, I personally find that such a demeanor is uncalled for and
highly disrespectful especially when he’s working with a group of hardworking
senior citizens on our very soil. No elderly ought to be treated this way and
worst still from a foreigner who runs them down incessantly.
I also gathered from other stall owners from the foodcourt that this PRC
cleaner has been acting like this frequently and I seriously think this is
unacceptable if his behaviour continues to go unchecked at this rate.

So, I’m counting on this medium to make the voice of the silent elderly
cleaners heard here. Hope you can help to get in touch with the cleaning agency
and urge them to look into this. The name of the cleaning agency and a short

Description of PRC Cleaner: Short and stout-looking with a distinctive loud
voice. He’s the only PRC there and most likely holding a supervisory
role
