I am from the Phillippines and I first came to Singapore 2 years to work as a bank manager. I would love to know the Singaporean culture better but while people pay respect to the dead during the Hungry Ghost Festi...val, they should not leave incense papers scattered all over the place.

I have already email to the relevant authorities and hopefully the government will listen to my advice and ban burning of papers in the public.See More

I am not being insensitive, every year, when the 7th month of the lunar calender arrives, signals the start of the air being polluted with burning incense papers, hell notes & candles & it was so bad years back, that, one have to wade through scattered incense paper, hell notes, burning candles, lighted embers, food offerings, in the morning on the way to work on the 1st day & on subsequent days, & on the 15th & the last day of that month. There will be people who burn their offerings anywhere, everywhere not just somewhere & it is frightening to see, burning embers being blown upwards in a draft & you wonder, what if they get into the homes of people on the 1st floor will it start a fire!.

Town council started to provide bins, yet there are many still burning all over the place. Furthermore this time of the year, the air is hazy, due to you already know what. This is the time of the year, everywhere becomes messy, untidy & the grasses & bushes gets scorched & some may never recover & grow back.

That is the burning incense & leaving offering part, next come the, 7 month dinner auction, though it is better now, that, they have a time limit, but still, it is noise, air pollution. My question is & I have asked those burning those offerings etc.. why can't they in a precinct have a communal burning, prayers & offerings?? Like building a common place in a area for these people to burn..whatever they want to burn?? That goes for the 7th month dinner too, there can be or maybe, 3 or 4 of such going on in one night in the small area you live...& that night is sure hell; you have noise, smoke, flying incense papers etc..

The only consolation I have in the area I live in is, over the years, those born before the war, many of them have passed away, so the burning of incense papers etc...not only for 7th month, but for any other festivals have decreased by at least 60%. The younger generation either they have stopped the practice or they do not believe in this anymore.

But could anyone shed the light on, why can't they collectively on the key days, 1st, 15th, last day, burn offerings & offer offerings at a common place?? How go people living in congested area in Hong Kong or religiously sensitive places like Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines does it? or the people here are just selfish??
