Kaohsiung, Feb. 9 (CNA) "Surrendering" to police could be the smartest decision Hui Bao (灰寶), a stray pet parrot, ever made, as its move allowed it to find its way home after becoming lost in the concrete jungle of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan for 16 months.

Hui Bao and its owner were reunited late last month after it flew to a motorcycle parking area in front of a city police station and let a police officer apprehend it without any resistance, Lu Chieh-ching (呂皆慶), a member of a SWAT team under the Public Safety Brigade of the Kaohsiung City Police Department, said Monday.

While examining the gray parrot, his team commander Lin Lien-sheng (林連勝) discovered the bird had a piece of string tied to its leg and a leg ring bearing a set of numerals.

After posting the parrot's photo on the website of the Taiwan Parrot Coalition (台灣鸚鵡聯盟), they received many phone calls inquiring about the bird, but none of them were from Hui Bao's owner until a woman surnamed Lu called, Lin continued.

When Lu was able to provide the leg ring identification number, they knew she was the rightful owner of the bird, Lin said.

Both Lu and Hui Bao appeared excited when they were reunited at the police station, according to Lin.

Lu said the parrot is part of her family and that they missed the bird a lot after it flew away. "I never thought Hui Bao would be so smart as to get reunited with me in this way," she said.
