NSP manifesto calls for cheaper housing

HOUSING issues form a key focus area of the National Solidarity Party (NSP)'s election manifesto unveiled on Thursday.

The party is calling for new Housing Board flats to be sold at 'cost-plus' for those buying for the first time, and restrictions to be imposed on permanent residents reselling their flats to prevent speculation.

The party is the latest to join an ongoing exchange between the ruling People's Action Party and the Workers' Party (WP), sparked by the WP's proposal to lower new flat prices by pegging them to median incomes rather than market forces, which National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan has said is flawed.

The NSP manifesto also calls for more spending on healthcare and public transport, and ministers' salaries to be cut and pegged to national wage growth.

On employment, the NSP wants to reduce the number of mid-skilled foreign workers, such as entry-level graduates, diploma holders and technicians, and job priority to be given to Singaporeans.

At a press conference on Thursday, the party also unveiled its slate of five for Marine Parade GRC: advertising executive Nicole Seah, 24, former Nee Soon Central MP Cheo Chai Chen, 60, NSP organising secretary Ivan Yeo, 63, a managing director, project director Spencer Ng, 31, and warehouse assistant Abdul Salim Harun, 29.

In all, the party will field 24 candidates for the May 7 polls.
