Nominated MP supports PAP

I thought the idea of having a nominated MP is to be neutral and independent.

Apparently not. Eugene Tan, our star, quickly disabuses us of this archaic and flawed notion.

Assistant Professor Eugene Tan from the Singapore Management University, who is Nominated MP, said: "One is that the PAP is the party for all Singaporeans. That the party is able to aggregate and align the interests of Singaporeans regardless of their station in life. Two, can the PAP continue to maintain the confidence of the electorate even as Singaporeans appreciate a more competitive political landscape? Managing expectations of a more demanding populace and delivering a good life are indicative of the challenges of taking on the problems of success. Three, the PAP has to be prepared to be big-hearted in dealing with dissent and contrary views. Can it lead and yet follow public opinion, instead of having to dominate the discourse?"

(1)

ET: PAP is the party for all Singaporeans.
LKY: If Aljunied voters vote in WP, they will have 5 years to repent!

(2)

ET: PAP is able to align interests of Singaporeans regardless of their station in life.
LKY: Without foreigners, Singapore will go the way of the do-do.

And all this while, foreigners are kicking Singaporeans out of the job market, the income gap has widened, the poor have their wages stagnating, property prices escalating.

And the PAP is able to align interests of ALL Singaporeans?!?!?

(3) ET: PAP is big-hearted in dealing with alternative views.

YEAH RIGHT, Ng Eng Hen wants to sue TRS, many people want to sue TRE, Alex Au apologized (was it once or twice?!?!), TOC gazetted, PAP IB going around Facebook and forums spilling their trash, etc etc.

PAP IBs, idiotic laws, gazetting, lawsuits at the ready, and yes, PAP is big hearted. BIG HEARTED!

To be fair to him, he has disagreed with the PAP with various issues while in parliament, if you look at the parliamentary records. The most well known case of course is the case whether the PM is obliged to call for the Hougang bye election. I don't think it is fair to pick a few issues where he has agreed with the PAP and then immediately label him as a PAP dog. Being neutral and independent means you would disagree with some issues and agree with some other issues. Disagreeing with everything doesn't make you a neutral, just a contrarian.

If you look carefully at the quoted paragraph, you will notice that Eugene Tan made 3 points, but the article completely left out the context of the argument that he was trying to make. If you look at point one alone, then yes, it looks like Eugene is trying to praise the PAP. However, if you look at points two and three, everything changes. It is now obvious that points that Eugene Tan is trying to make is towards the question "What are the challenges the PAP face", so "the PAP is the party for all Singaporeans" is not a statement of fact, but is one of the challenges that the PAP has to face - TO BECOME the party for all Singaporeans.

Sneaky reporting, but as usual, it is nothing we shouldn't expect.
