CANBERRA - CHINA has for the first time surpassed New Zealand and Britain as Australia's biggest source of migrants as both countries try to ease diplomatic tensions over Chinese investment in Australia and separatist rights. A record 6,350 migrants arrived in Australia from mainland China over four months to October, surpassing the 5,800 who arrived from Britain and 4,740 from neighbouring New Zealand, government figures showed. Australia's ties with China have been tense for months after China's state-owned metals firm Chinalco failed in a bid to take a US$19.5 billion (S$27.1 billion)stake in Rio Tinto, an Anglo-Australian mining company. But Australia's Mandarin-speaking Prime Minister Kevin Rudd met China's Premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of an Asia summit in October to work through differences, while Vice-Premier Li Keqiang later met Rudd in Sydney in a further thawing. A survey this month showed showed Mr Rudd's diplomatic efforts were paying off, with a majority of Chinese accepting Australia's place in Asia and acknowledging the country had a vital role to play in the region. In what was believed to be the first public survey of Chinese attitudes on Australia, the Lowy Institute poll showed almost half the 1,200 people surveyed believed Australians were generally suspicious of China's rising place in the world. -- REUTERS

Aussies have seen first hand the Aussie Chinese solidarity over the Beijing Olympic protests. This is giving South East Asian Chinese a bad name as well.

Let the Chinese come in, after a new years, they will pine for the culture of the motherland and return, keeping the NZ/OZ passports as backup.
