Many people lived in Bishan well before HDB flats were even built.

Indeed. The structures in Bishan are clearly newer and designed as an afterthought compared to Ang Mo Kio to the north and Toa Payoh to the south.

How haunted is Bishan? Here are the chilling facts…

Many people would be familiar with the haunted stories associated with Bishan MRT Station—rumours have it that when the station was just built, there were countless paranormal encounters, and maintenance staff apparently saw coffins inside the tunnel. But just how haunted is Bishan in general?

Well, there are three key haunted stories circulating about this big town, namely the one in the MRT station, the Samsui woman that roams the area and the child spirit in Bishan Park.

You’re a Bishan kia? Then you’d better click away, for we’re not responsible for the nightmares you’d be having tonight.

Bishan MRT Station

Bishan MRT Station used to be located on the site of the largest Chinese cemetery in Singapore. Rumours have it that in the early 1990s, the number of sightings was a lot more than what is shared now. In the early 1990s, a passenger felt that she was “groped” by several hands and passed out, but was later revived by other passengers.

In and near the stations, there have been sightings of headless figures, with some people hearing footsteps on the top of the train. The scariest part was the phantom passengers: rumours have it that some passengers would not have any reflections on the train windows. Next time, when you’re in the station, maybe you can try taking a look!

Woman’s head severed by construction lift

Many, many years ago, rumours have it that a Samsui woman (more commonly known as红头巾) had her head accidentally severed by a construction lift during work. After that, another woman was murdered just in front of the area that the Samsui woman was killed. While some attributed this to coincidence (and of course, not to mention that they’re all just rumours), some felt that there was some connection.

Child spirit in Bishan Park
There’s an urban legend that if you’re going to Bishan Park at night, you should bring a bag of sweets as there’ll be a child around the area asking for sweets, in particular on the bridge. If you don’t give any to him, he’ll attack you.

However, it is mentioned that the child does look normal on the outside. Maybe it’s just a mischievous kid who loves sweets?
