Man with paranoid schizophrenia gets 12 years' jail for fatal stabbing

A 53-year-old jobless man was on Monday jailed 12 years after pleading guilty to culpable homicide for fatally stabbing another man in the neck at a carpark three years ago.
The High Court heard that Tan Mui Ping, who was a fighter for a secret society, had got into an altercation with Mr Lim Chin Leong, 45, at a coffee shop in Block 19 Marsiling Lane at about 4.30pm on June 28, 2010.
The fracas between the two, who did not know each other, was broken up by their respective friends.
About six hours later, Tan, armed with a knife, attacked Mr Lim at a carpark next to the block. Mr Lim collapsed after a short chase and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
Tan was initially charged with murder but was found to be suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, which substantially reduced his mental responsibility for the killing.
