Man jailed 7 months for punching and kicking another man, causing serious injuries

SINGAPORE - A 24-year-old man who, together with three friends, punched and kicked another man, causing him serious injuries, was on Monday (March 7) jailed for seven months.
Alvin Wong Mun Loong pleaded guilty to a count of causing grievous hurt.
A district court heard that at about 6am on Feb 19 last year, the victim, Thean Hai Hui, 24, was waiting for a cab with his girlfriend at the taxi stand in front of Giant supermarket at VivoCity.
Wong's friend, Edmund Chiang Jing Cong, 21, went to stand beside them and mumbled to himself.
Mr Thean told Chiang to shut up, and a quarrel started between them.
Chiang's three friends - Wong, Daryl Gan Yu Zhu, 21, and Tomi Tay, 21 - then arrived, and asked Thean and Chiang what happened.
In response, Thean shouted at the four.
Wong, Chiang and Gan then assaulted Thean for about a minute, while Tay prevented an unknown man from stopping the attack.
The assault was captured on closed-circuit television.
The four friends then walked away, leaving Thean on the ground.
Among other injuries, he suffered a fractured eye socket and could not open his eyes fully.
He also had bruises and cuts on his face, and his lips were swollen.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Carene Poh asked for nine months to a year in jail for Wong.
The assault was unnecessary, she said, and Wong, who has a string of convictions dating back to 2011, also committed the offence shortly after his release from prison.
Wong's lawyer Josephus Tan asked for seven months' jail. Wong's actions were "spontaneous and had arisen on the spur of a moment's impulse", he said.
The maximum punishment for causing grievous hurt is 10 years' jail with a fine or caning.
For their part in the assault, Chiang was earlier sentenced to six months' jail while Gan was sent for reformative training.
