SINGAPORE - A man was found dead in a drain in Yio Chu Kang on Thursday morning.

It is believed that the 45-year-old Singaporean fell into the drain and hit his head. But no one seems to know how he ended up there.

His body was found lying face down in a drain about 1m wide and 1m deep, along Yio Chu Kang Road at about 8.20am. The drain is located between a narrow one-way street and a large tree.

There were tattoos on the man's arms and back, and blood could be seen around his eyes and nose, reported Shin Min Daily News. He was wearing a white T-shirt, black pants and black shoes.

Two passers-by saw the body in the morning and called for help, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Police

The police received a call requesting for assistance at about 8.20am. Upon arrival, they found the man lying motionless. The Singapore Civil Defence Force also sent an ambulance.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Witnesses told The New Paper that the police cordoned off the area and moved the man's body to a nearby road while they conducted investigations. The man's identity remains unknown.

The police have classified the case as unnatural death and are investigating.

When TNP went to the scene on Thursday afternoon, there were patches of blood in the drain and on the road.
Mr Lieu Shin Charng, 25, who works in a tyre shop nearby, said that when he came to work at 9am, the body had been covered with white cloth.

"A blue tent was then placed around it. Judging by the position of the man's body, he might have lost his footing and fallen forward," he said.

"Maybe he was drunk. There are several pubs nearby and he might have been drinking there."

There were three pubs in that stretch of road. When approached, their staff said the man was unlikely to have been a customer as the pubs close at 1am every night.

Ms Alice Tan, 45, a bartender at The Pub Entertainment, said: "How could he be our customer when we close at 1am and his body was found only at 8am? It doesn't make sense."

Ms Sophia Tan, an employee of Fang Jie Fun Pub, agreed.

The 27-year-old, who saw a photograph of the body in Shin Min, said: "I don't recognise him. He is more likely to have slipped while walking on the road.

"The road is very narrow, and a car could have come up from behind and honked. It might have scared him and caused him to lose his footing."
