In a span of 20 minutes, a 26-year-old man allegedly raped a 24-year-old woman three times at three different spots along a stretch of road from Martin Road to River Valley Close, in the wee hours of Chinese New Year's Eve in 2013.

The woman's torn panties were later found strewn among vegetation at the first location, while the zipper of her blood-stained dress was found to be dislodged.

Calling it a "brazen case", prosecutors yesterday proceeded against Singaporean Lim Choon Beng, now 30, on three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of outrage of modesty.

Lim, who is in remand, pleaded not guilty and is contesting all seven charges in a trial scheduled for eight days in the High Court.

He claims he does not remember his actions. He is defended by Mr Anand Nalachandran under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme.

The first to take the stand is the alleged victim, a performing artist from China, who testified behind closed doors. A court order bars her identity from being made public. The Straits Times understands she stopped working here after the incident but returned for the trial.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lin Yinbing told the court in her opening address that the victim, now 27, will give an account of how she was waylaid on the street on Feb 9, 2013.

Lim allegedly molested and raped her at 3.15am in Martin Road in front of the Watermark condominium. Ten minutes later, he allegedly raped and sexually assaulted her in front of the Robertson 100 condominium. At about 3.35am, he allegedly raped and sexually assaulted her near lamp-post number 16 along River Valley Close.

Witnesses lined up to testify for the prosecution include an independent eyewitness who called the police after seeing Lim on top of the crying woman, a motorist who picked up and drove her in search of a police station, and a friend of the alleged victim who received a call from her while she was in the car, telling him she had been raped.

The prosecution will also submit forensic evidence to prove its case. The DPP told the court that Lim's DNA was found on the woman's bra, her blood was found on his clothes, and soil was found on their clothes.

The maximum punishment for each count of rape and sexual assault is 20 years' jail, as well as caning or a fine. The trial continues today.

River Valley rape trial: Man changes mind, pleads guilty

A day after he pleaded not guilty to raping a woman at three different spots in 20 minutes along a stretch of road, a 30-year-old man changed his mind and admitted his guilt.

Instead of continuing with his High Court trial in what prosecutors describe as a "brazen case", Lim Choon Beng pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of aggravated outrage of modesty. Four other charges will be considered during sentencing.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Zhuo Wenzhao told the court that Lim, who was jobless, was drinking with friends in Robertson Quay before he approached the victim along Martin Road at about 3am on Feb 9, 2013.

The 24-year-old woman from China, who worked as a performer at a lounge, was walking home alone from Havelock Road to her apartment. She slowed down to let Lim walk ahead of her.

After a short distance, Lim, then 26, turned around and spoke to her in English, before asking her in Mandarin if she was a Chinese national and if she liked American men.

Despite her attempts to shake him off, Lim grabbed her and pushed her backwards onto a grass patch in front of the Watermark condominium at about 3.15am.

The woman begged him to let her off, but he paid no heed and raped her.

When some cars passed by, Lim got off the victim. At about 3.25am, he pulled her across Rodyk Street and hit her head against a wall at the Robertson 100 condo.

The woman begged again to be freed but he raped her again.

Thinking that she could seek help from a security guard, the woman suggested that they go to her apartment. Meanwhile, a female security guard at The Inspira condo called the police after seeing Lim on top of the crying victim.

At about 3.35am, when Lim and the victim reached River Valley Close, he pinned her to the ground, forced her to perform oral sex on him and raped her again. This time, she managed to escape.

After running some distance, the victim stopped a car with a woman behind the wheel. She also contacted a friend to call the police.

When the victim returned to River Valley Close, she found police officers at the scene with Lim and immediately pointed him out as the person who had raped her.

The case has been adjourned to tomorrow for sentencing arguments. The maximum punishment for rape and sexual assault is 20 years' jail as well as caning or a fine.

Prosecution seeks 17 years' jail and 24 strokes for man who raped woman three times

Prosecutors are seeking at least 17 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane for rapist Lim Choon Beng.

SINGAPORE - The woman who was raped three times in 20 minutes by a stranger along a stretch of public road broke down on Tuesday when she faced her attacker on the first day of his trial, it was revealed in court on Friday (May 6).

Prosecutors are seeking at least 17 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane for rapist Lim Choon Beng, 30, arguing that a deterrent sentence was warranted for his audacity in carrying out the repeated rapes.

"Each time the victim thought that traumatising experience had ended, the accused shattered her hopes by bringing her to a different location and repeating the sexual violence," said Deputy Public Prosecutor Zhuo Wenzhao.

The DPP argued that despite overwhelming evidence against him, Lim chose to claim trial. As a result, the 27-year-old victim had to fly back from China and go through the trauma of recounting her ordeal in court.

The DPP asked the court not to regard Lim's eventual plea of guilt as a mitigating factor which would warrant a discount in his sentence.

Calling it a "brazen case", prosecutors yesterday proceeded against Singaporean Lim Choon Beng, 30, on three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of outrage of modesty.

Lim is accused of raping and sexually assaulting the nightclub singer at three different spots along a stretch of road from Martin Road to River Valley Close on Feb 9, 2013, the eve of Chinese New Year. He was then 26 and she, 24.

After he pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, a trial started with the victim testifying in a closed-door hearing. The next day, Lim changed his mind and pleaded guilty to four of the charges, with four other charges to be considered during sentencing.

His lawyer, Mr Anand Nalachandran, assigned to defend him under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, argued that his client claimed trial to find clarity because he had no recollection of his offences as he was experiencing alcohol amnesia.

Lim, who was due to be sentenced later that month for illegal moneylending offences, had been drinking with some friends before the incident. The last thing he remembered was holding a shot of alcohol; the next thing he knew, he was sitting on a pavement surrounded by police officers, said Mr Nalachandran.

The lawyer said his client was concerned about the lack of DNA evidence proving penetration and had doubts about his ability to rape her, given his level of intoxication.

But after hearing the victim's testimony, he decided to accept her account and take responsibility for his actions instead of prolonging her agony.

The lawyer argued for a jail term of 13 to 15 years. "These 20 minutes have permanently altered the course of his life," he said.

Man in horrendous triple-rape gets nearly 17 years and 22 strokes

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

The victim was walking home around 3am on the eve of Chinese New Year in 2013 when the perpetrator attacked and raped her outside Watermark condominum, and two more times elsewhere.

SINGAPORE - The 30-year-old man who raped a woman three times within a 20-minute period in 2013 has been sentenced to jail for 16 years, 10 months and two weeks, and will be given 22 strokes of the cane.

The Straits Times reported that the judge, in passing sentence, said that "the idea that one can walk safely on the public road in Singapore at any time of the day was shattered by the shocking and brazen acts of the accused that morning".

Lim Choon Beng had said initially that he did not remember the rape, and claimed trial.

However, in a sudden turnabout, he pleaded guilty on May 4.

The attacks on the woman, which occured on Chinese New Year's Eve, were so traumatising that the woman has said that she is reminded of the ordeal every Chinese New Year.

Prosecutors had sought at least 17 years' jail and the maximum 24 strokes of the cane last week.
