Landlord jailed for swinging hammer at tenant

By Elena Chong

A MAN who swung a hammer at his tenant and struck him on the head with the weapon was jailed for nine months on Wednesday.

Lawrence Chng Teck Kok, 62, pleaded guilty to causing hurt to Chinese national Liu Hua, 26, at his Pasir Ris Street 72 flat on Sept 25.

A Community Court heard that a few days before the incident, Chng had told Mr Liu, a cleaner, and his two room-mates to move out within three days as he would be selling his flat.

On Sept 25, he again told Mr Liu and his room-mates to leave, but the victim wanted three months' notice and his deposit back.

Angry that Mr Liu refused to move out immediately, Chng punched him twice in the face, and later snuck back into the room and swung the hammer at the victim.

The weapon struck the victim on the head, causing cuts over his right ear and back of the head.

Chng, who has previous convictions for using abusive language, criminal intimidation and causing hurt to a public servant, had the sentence backdated to Sept 27.

He could have been jailed for up to seven years.
