By Khushwant Singh
ON THURSDAY, Satthiyan Anbarasan, 33, was jailed a year for the theft of a Toyota Axio valued at $57,000, on March 16 last year.
A district court heard that businessman Lim Chee Kian, 42, went to a pub in Circular Road the previous evening to meet some friends. At about 1am, he left only to wake up and find himself lying on the pavement along South Bridge Road, his pockets empty. Cash of $220, his car key, cell phone valued at $1,000, credit cards and an ATM card were missing.
Satthiyan was picked up by police on Oct 20, and an accomplice, Leo Rajmond Kristhu Raja, 33, was arrested two days later. Investigations revealed that after they relieved Mr Lim of his belongings, they went in search of his car and found it parked in a nearby street by using the electronic car key.
They then took it for a joy ride before abandoning it in Delta Avenue, near River Valley Road. The car was discovered 10 days. Leo Rajmond, a mover, has been fined $2,000 for the theft of Mr Lim's wallet.
In addition to the theft of the car, Satthiyan, who is a cleaning supervisor, also pleaded guilty to driving the stolen car while under a two-year driving disqualification for drink-driving in 2009.
The court heard he had also broke the law on March 31 this year by punching Mr Sevam Manney, 41, a cleaner of Warren Country Club, over late payment to wages to one of his workers. He also committed criminal trespass by climbing over the gate into the premises of Defu Furniture in Sungei Kadut Way the next day.
For committing these offences, he would have to serve another eight months in jail, bringing the total sentence to 20 months.
