A MAN who assaulted two strangers in less than an hour was sentenced to 12 months' jail and ordered to be given nine strokes of the cane on Tuesday. Simon Ong Boon Meng, 31, a mover, was at Plaza Singapura on Sept 21 when he accused Mr Tony Budianto Bee, 24, of staring at him. Mr Bee denied this. Ong used his right hand to punch the victim several times on the face, causing him a fracture. Ong's accomplice, whose case is pending, also attacked the victim with a metal piece he picked up on the floor. The duo then fled, together with a 16-year-old who did not take part in the assault. As they were walking along the pavement outside Centrepoint, Ochard Road, Mr Kikushima Kenji accidentally bumped into Ong, who became unhappy that the 19-year-old assistant restaurant manager did not apologise. Ong went after Mr Kenji, scolded him and punched him on the face. The accomplice also struck the victim with the metal piece. Two days later, Ong was found with a knife tucked at the back of his jeans at the multi-storey carpark at Cairnhill Road. Ong, who has convictions for theft and drug taking, pleaded guilty to the three charges.

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A FULL-TIME national serviceman who assaulted two strangers with a metal piece was jailed for 24 months and ordered to be given six strokes of the cane on Thursday. Daniel Tan Xiao Long, 21, pleaded guilty to striking the left shoulder of Mr Tony Budianto Bee, 24, with a metal piece at Plaza Singapura on Orchard Road on Sept 21. Half an hour later, he struck Mr Kikushima Kenji, 19, on the left arm, causing an 8cm-long cut and a fracture of the bony tip of his elbow outside Centrepoint. The first attack took place after his accomplice, Simon Ong Boon Meng, 31, had accused the victim of staring at them. Ong has been dealt with. While Tan and Ong, together with their friend, were walking on the pavement along Centrepoint, Mr Kenji accidentally brushed against Ong. Ong confronted the victim about the matter and gave him a punch on the face. Tan used the metal piece tucked in his jeans to strike the victim who raised his left arm to block the blow. But his arm was injured and bled profusely. Tan could have been jailed for up to 15 years and fined or caned for the grievous hurt charge.

Civil case only if not grevious hurt and instruments used. In this instance, metal pole was used and grevious hurt inflicted so police have to step in.
