Jail for helping loan shark again
<!-- by line --> By Khushwant Singh

HIS fourth appearance in court earned Cheng Hwee Yeong a stern rebuke from a district judge especially after the court heard that this was the second time he had worked for unlicensed moneylenders. The 21-year-old was nabbed for making 14 bank transfers of illegal debts in August (09) and was jailed for 14 months and fined $140,000 on Monday after he pleaded guilty to seven offences. He also has previous convictions for theft and drug consumption. Noting his nonchalant attitude, District Judge Jill Tan asked him: 'You think it's funny to spend your life in and out of jail. 'Soccer betting and working for loan sharks is not the way to make a living. Rather it is trying to get a job and working hard.'
