Spore's political situation is beyond salvage. The Old Man has destroyed whatever that had made Spore & the people great. Spore is already beyond hope while the future (despite IR)is bleak. Dr Chee Soon Juan & JB Jeyaretnam are to be commended for their courageous efforts to make the people aware of their democratic rights & to oppose the FamiLee. But it is in vain & where is the support? CSJ has only a small band of hardcore supporters while JBJ cuts a lonely figure post-Workers Party. The last few election, we have seen tremendous public attendances at opposition rallies, but on polling day, the status quo is maintained. This has happen far too many times!

The reason lies with Spore's origins & insidious govt policies which have accentuate the racial differences & cultivated a cultural divide. The Old Man fears English speakers. Sporeans who were born before or around 1965 remembered a time where the racial identity was blind - Chinese, Malay, Indians & Eurasians played together & became friends. The common factor which allowed this to happen was English - everyone spoke English. The kampongs & villages were a melting pot of racial harmony & communal relations were great. Post-independence, Old Man's social engineering policies started to bite. A minor digression - Most Sporean Chinese originate from Southern China & their forefathers came to seek fortunes here after political upheaval & economic uncertainty in China. From father to son, the message passed down thru generations was not to meddle with politics but focus on your own future - career, job, work or business. Material comforts are important but politics unwelcome!

The Old Man was smart but he's not a brilliant chap. He was more of a ruffian, a Street Gangster, not a Strategist. He was Baba (of Nyonya-stock). How could he understood Chinese culture & thinking? He was monolingual & could not even read nor write Mandarin then. Yet he implemented policies which had tremendous racial & cultural impact on Spore. 1st, the bilingual education policy which impacted heavily on English speakers & created deep racial divisions.

The Eurasian were the 1st to suffer & they were forced to emigrate in the 1970/80s. The Anglo-Indians felt the bilingualism effect, they, too, left. The English speaking Chinese remained but were excluded from higher education due to stiff bilingual requirements. However, English speakers were middle & high income, they could afford to send their children to USA, Canada, Australia, NZ or the UK in the 1970s/1980s. The local institutions could churn out local graduates in numbers but many were weak in communication, reasoning & writing skills. English speakers with their overseas degrees return & help Spore with the next growth phase (1986 - 1996) - Electronics (post- IBM PC); Banking/Securities Trading, etc.
This group understood democracy & human rights from their time overseas but fortunately for Old Man, they were too busy with their careers to bother with politics.

The problem with bilingualism is that psychologically-speaking, the brain works only in a monolingual channel; either in English or in Mandarin. The severe requirements of bilingualism require that Mandarin takes priority over English. That is no coincidence that although English is spoken in Spore but spoken English has declined. "Catch no ball","You see me no up","You no friend me" are meaningless phases that are literal translation of Chinese dialect and Mandarin. Foreigners won't understand but only locals do. The P65 generation (Post-Independence) & Gen-X, although they speak English but amongst friends, they used Mandarin to communicate.

The Old Man's policies pander to the majority of Chinese speaking Sporeans; traditional & conservative (>65%). No coincidence that the recent election - 66.6% voted for the FamiLee. They are his power base! Why did CSJ fail while Chiam See Tong & Low Thia Kiang succeeded are for the same reasons - Chinese speaking Sporeans. This majority don't understand democratic principles & human rights.

Old Man channel huge funds to Channel 8 & U - Chinese language programs, promoting media celebrities and expensive serial programs to keep this group happy. Underneath, they insidiously transmit & glorify Chinese & Confucian values i.e., respect for authority, passivity to govt, family, filial piety, conformism, avoid inquisitiveness, etc. Channel 5 locally produced English programs by comparison seemed infantile & silly. Why? Because Old Man deemed this group dangerous. Censorship targets at this group since most if not all, democratic, human rights & liberal materials are written in the English language. Few, if any, are in Chinese.

The HDB program & HDB racial quotas have divided Spore into racial enclaves. Rarely interracial friendship or interactions are seen in Spore today. Eastpoint in Simei is predominantly Malay while Tekka Square is Indian. Old Man's forced infertility program has hurt Spore replacement numbers & economic potential (foreign Talent scheme was just a stop-gap measure)

The Asian crisis 1997/1998, Global Tech crash 2001/2002 & SARs 2003 had hurt the English Speaking group badly. In addition, Old Man's son & his stupid securities trading & banking liberialization policies destroyed many jobs in those industry. Furthermore, PSA's mistake in underestimating Maersk Line costs huge job losses; SIA which retrenched many staff during the 2003 SARs crisis when no other airline did the same; HDB with its unsold public housing stock like wise. Between 1997 to 2004, English speakers were being hammered from pillar to post.

They no longer felt secure & were being let down in Spore; they had felt the blunt of the economic environment and compound by inhuman govt policy (liberialization) & terrible business decisions (PSA/ SIA/HDB). Those with qualifications & means began a quiet exodus in emigrating overseas. In 2002 NDP, then-PM Holy Goh made his silly & unwarranted speech, "Quitters vs Stayers" and instead of convincing them to stay, actually caused a stampede of Sporeans to leave. He publicized the emigration issue. Many migration agents came out of the woodwork in Spore to provide migration services ironically thanks to Holy Goh. The problem is the group most likely to assert for political participation has already deserted Spore. That is why Spore cannot be salvaged. The govt caused a terrible brain drain to occur.

This will bring Spore many, many future problems. 1st of all, they were educated, highly skilled, speak & wrote good English and their children will benefit their adopted nation. They are and will be irreplaceable. 2ndly, the foreign talent scheme is only a stop-gap bringing boatloads of PRC, Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese, etc. The bottom line is English continues to decline affecting service levels in tourism, shopping & servicing. Already, local non-Chinese are complaining about service staff unable to communicate in English. A foreigner commented after his Tiger Airways flight that he could not understand the English announcements made by the cabin crew & thought it was a foreign language. Also, recent problems with Tiger Airways flights were not effectively addressed by management staff - instead stranded passengers were left high & dry. The business organization is suffering from sclerosis - an inability to coordinate and is breaking down at the critical end. An elitist govt cannot hope to function nor operate if sclerosis is affecting/hardening all its branches downwards. Like Stephen Hawkins, a brilliant but totally paralyzed scientist, the Old Man suffers from sclerosis of his mind - become harden (inhuman policies/climate of fear) and uncoordinated (lost touch with the ground). So what if he has millions to last a few lifetimes, he has lost his chance for integrity, respect and admiration years ago and these will be priceless unlike money.

From father to son, the message passed down thru generations was not to meddle with politics but focus on your own future - career, job, work or business. Material comforts are important but politics unwelcome!

According to Bo Yang, author of ‘The Ugly Chinaman’, the majority of Han Chinese people everywhere only seek fame and fortune, protecting their rice bowl, and maintaining and saving face.

China has a very long history of being ruled by tyrants for thousands of years. The great grandfather told the grandfather not mess with politics, who in turn told the father, who in turn told the son, who in turn told the grandson, who in turn told the great grandson, and on and on and on……..

Why should SG be any different from China when Chinese people everywhere are so Kia Cheng Hu and Bo Lumpar when it comes to dealing with politics? How can SG Chinese have freedom & individual rights in their own country when it’s not even in their subconscious & genes to want to be free and have individual rights? CSJ is either a PAP spy or someone so far removed from the common man and so poor at the political game that he doesn't even realize why he lose more support with each passing election. I seriously don't think someone like him deserves to be commented

It's ok Singaporeans love low pay and love to squeeze in MRTs !

have u try experiencing the same thing in other countries? if u r in african, maybe u gotta walk, get waylaid, raped or killed with body discarded without the chance of being discovered.

even in the most advancef lst world country of japan, just take a good look at the denizens who build makeshift cardboard shelter in their train station premises.

SGP might not even be listed in the world atlas had that national betrayer chee soon juan ruled over it instead of our oldman.

chee is here to destroy singapore, to fix every singaporeans and to appease his "insiduous foreign backer and financier". he's not for the good, the welfarism or the freedom of speech.

he's satan in disguise!

I have to say that you took time and effort to write a long 'essay' to paint a bleak picture of SG future. People has been talking down SG, in and outside of SG since day 1 it became independence. If not because of US financial crisis, do you think SG today is worse than SG in the 80', 70', 60' ??

Sporeans who were born before or around 1965 remembered a time where the racial identity was blind - Chinese, Malay, Indians & Eurasians played together & became friends.

I do not know about you, I know very few old generations/folks who have none-chinese friends or were inter-racial marriage. But it is common sight to see inter-racial marriage today.

Did you know why we have Little India, Chinatown, Malay Kampung ... Its was intentionally segregated by British Empire. Even among Chinese, it was further divided by clans and dialect groups.

From father to son, the message passed down thru generations was not to meddle with politics but focus on your own future - career, job, work or business. Material comforts are important but politics unwelcome!

Very few immigrants in US/OZ/UK are active in politic too. Do you see ex-SG actively participate in western political circus.

The Old Man was smart but he's not a brilliant chap. He was more of a ruffian, a Street Gangster, not a Strategist. He was Baba (of Nyonya-stock). How could he understood Chinese culture & thinking? 1st, the bilingual education policy which impacted heavily on English speakers & created deep racial divisions.

It was English that was elevated to the god-like status by the British that crack open a deep-deep division among races, within races.

The Eurasian were the 1st to suffer & they were forced to emigrate in the 1970/80s. The Anglo-Indians felt the bilingualism effect, they, too, left.

How many chinese were truly English-speaking in 60's, only a small number of baba, those with deep connection in British trade/jobs. most chinese were dialect speaking. the number of schools in SG in the 50 and 60 was small. Also, who could effort to send kids to school.
LKY had to learn dialect to communicate with voters in the early days of his political career.

The local institutions could churn out local graduates in numbers but many were weak in communication, reasoning & writing skills.

If you only look at them from English skill point of view. However, it did not deter SG to leapfrog from third world. I have a lot of dialect speaking friends who make tons of money and are very successful in competing with foreign company.

English speakers with their overseas degrees return & help Spore with the next growth phase (1986 - 1996) - Electronics (post- IBM PC); Banking/Securities Trading, etc. This group understood democracy & human rights from their time overseas but fortunately for Old Man, they were too busy with their careers to bother with politics.

if you look at the current/past members of the cabinet, most of them held/hold foreign degrees.

The severe requirements of bilingualism require that Mandarin takes priority over English. That is no coincidence that although English is spoken in Spore but spoken English has declined.

Unless you grow up in US/OZ/NZ, For the most part of the world are bilingual. Italy, Germany, Switzerland, HK/TWN....

That is the beauty of Bilingual. Malay may feel more connected within their own race, Chinese feel more at ease in Mandarin... In the US, it is very common to see people 'get-together' among their own race too, even they are all born and bred in the same country. Otherwise, what is so BIG deal Obama becomes the FIRST black president

Are you trying to say that Mandarin-speaking people 'blindly' support LKY, and do not give a hack about democracy and human rights? If CSJ fails to connect with the voters, refuses to understand the voters, why should voters vote for him.

they insidiously transmit & glorify Chinese & Confucian values i.e., respect for authority, passivity to govt, family, filial piety, conformism, avoid inquisitiveness, etc. Channel 5 locally produced English programs by comparison seemed infantile & silly. Why? Because Old Man deemed this group dangerous.

It is pure Business. An English serial programs have NO-MARKET outside SG. Why a HK/TWN/MY/India/US TV viewers want to spend 60 minutes of their leisure time watching Asians/SG singing/acting in English language? they might as well watch American Idols, Celine Dion...

Censorship targets at this group since most if not all, democratic, human rights & liberal materials are written in the English language. Few, if any, are in Chinese.

How many of us do not understand English these days? we may not speak well, but we have a hack of vocabury to get by for most tasks. Are you saying Tamil/Malay are not democatic too?

The HDB program & HDB racial quotas have divided Spore into racial enclaves.

please lah, if you go to US/OZ... there are tons of heavy race-based segregation in every town and city. Most of the racial segregation areas in SG, are part of the SG history. It is very hard to see Chinese family move in Little India, or Indian/malay move in Chinatown. At least the HDB quotas limit the racial segregation.

The Asian crisis 1997/1998, Global Tech crash 2001/2002 & SARs 2003 had hurt the English Speaking group badly. Between 1997 to 2004, English speakers were being hammered from pillar to post.

Every corner of the world experience interior / exterior impact of business cycle. English speaking or not, faced with the same fate... no life long iron-rice-bowl.

They no longer felt secure & were being let down in Spore; In 2002 NDP, then-PM Holy Goh made his silly & unwarranted speech, "Quitters vs Stayers" and instead of convincing them to stay, actually caused a stampede of Sporeans to leave. The govt caused a terrible brain drain to occur.

HK, TWN, India, Korea.. all have their share of seeing their people migrating to western country. If people choose to leave SG because of what PM-Goh said, they might make a u-turn if they see Indian-bashing in OZ, All-chinese-are-spy in US, all-pakistan-are-terrorist in UK..

The bottom line is English continues to decline affecting service levels in tourism, shopping & servicing. Already, local non-Chinese are complaining about service staff unable to communicate in English.

Local-chinese staff un-able to communicate in English effectively? Our English today is worse than last generation?
There is room for anyone to succeed in SG whether they have the profesor-grade English or not.
local-none-chinese speak/understand better English? You must be out-of-country for a very long time. Check out who won the dEnglish ebate competition year after year, who has scored BIG in English in O/A level year-after-year..

A foreigner commented after his Tiger Airways flight that he could not understand the English announcements made by the cabin crew & thought it was a foreign language. So what if he has millions to last a few lifetimes, he has lost his chance for integrity, respect and admiration years ago and these will be priceless unlike money.

I donot blame you if you choose to emigrate overseas, you just have too many 'negative energy about SG' in your system. Your expectation of SG is set so high, you cant tolerate any 'everyday' guy to live and breath and make mistake in this country. I sincerely hope other country may bless you with you want and make you proud at least once in your life.

Why should SG be any different from China when Chinese people everywhere are so Kia Cheng Hu and Bo Lumpar when it comes to dealing with politics?

HK, Taiwan and SG (with exception of China) are some of the most democratic countries in Asia (and the world).

How can SG Chinese have freedom & individual rights in their own country when it’s not even in their subconscious & genes to want to be free and have individual rights? The abstract concept of freedom & individual rights isn’t even part of the Chinese culture.

If you are Indian/Malay/white/whatever-race trying to talk down Chinese, please go to CNN/ABC/BCC, show your face and proclaim your theory.

SG Chinks don’t deserve to have freedom & individual rights!! They only have themselves to blame for living in the “Land of the Cowards and Home of the Slaves.”

try telling Jim Rogers, he may one day become convinced of what you say, and abandon ship and crawl back to his great western country/culture.

I'm sure LKY's read that book too.

"We have a practical people whose culture tells them that contention for the sake of contention leads to disaster. I have said this on many a previous occasion; that had the mix in Singapore been different, had it been 75% Indians, 15% Malays and the rest Chinese, it would not have worked. Because they believe in the politics of contention, of opposition. But because the culture was such that the populace sought a practical way out of their difficulties, therefore it has worked." Lee Kuan Yew in Parliament, 1985.
