He was very poor and his family badly needed him to keep his job. He begged his employer not to fire him, but the video of him stopping the bus for the 2 muslim passengers went viral, and there was a lot of pressure from increasing anti-muslim sentiment in India to have him fired. So he lost his job and killed himself.
