Impersonator jailed for cheating six people of over S$20,000

SINGAPORE: A man was jailed on Thursday for cheating six people of S$21,525, after convincing them he was the managing director of Chan Brothers Travel Agency.

Chan Kok Yong, 30, who committed the offences between March and April this year, will be jailed for 16 months.

The tall, tanned man faced six charges of cheating.

He pleaded guilty to three of them while the rest were taken into consideration.

Chan told 26-year-old Ms Silver Ang Zi Hui in March that he was the boss of Chan Brothers and he was interested in doing a travel commercial with her.

She forked out S$10,940 on shopping and entertainment expenses on Chan, who said he would reimburse her after the completion of the project.

However, he was not contactable after that.

Ms Ang also discovered that there was no such person working in the travel agency.

On another occasion that month, Chan told 30-year-old Mr Chin Yun Min that he wanted to employ him as his personal assistant.

Mr Chin paid for all of Chan's personal expenses amounting to S$9,380.

Before sentencing him, District Judge Toh Yung Cheong noted that Chan had been jailed previously and committed the offences after he had been released.

He added that this was Chan's 'final chance'.

Chan could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined for each charge.
