Taipei, Nov. 18 (CNA) Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp. (宏達電) offered a one-day promotion for a "buy one, get one free" deal in the United States Tuesday as part of its weekly incentives targeting the Thanksgiving shopping season.

This week's HTC Hot Deal allows U.S. consumers to get a free HTC Desire 626 mid-range phone if they buy an HTC One M9 flagship model on Tuesday, according to the company's Twitter post.

The One M9 is priced at US$649 in the U.S. and the Desire 626 starts from US$179.

HTC, which provided the discounted Nexus 9 tablet and the One A9 phone over the first two Tuesdays of November, is aiming to attract more consumers and boost sales on the eve of the Thanksgiving Day holiday, as more retailers start discounting merchandise earlier in November.

According to a report published Nov. 6 by market research firm comScore Inc., HTC's U.S. market share slid by 0.1 percentage points sequentially to 3.3 percent in the third quarter of this year, maintaining its fifth place ranking.

In an investor conference held Oct. 30, Chang Chia-lin (張嘉臨), chief financial officer and president of global sales at HTC, forecast that the company will not turn a profit in the current quarter because it is still facing pressing challenges in the competitive handset market.

But Chang said the losses for the October-December period could be smaller than those incurred in the previous quarter due to signs that the company's operations are improving.

In the three months ending in September, HTC incurred NT$4.5 billion (US$137 million) in net losses, compared with NT$8 billion recorded in the second quarter.
