SINGAPORE: Singapore's biggest annual outdoor parade promises to be a theatrical extravaganza this year.

Entitled "Red, White and Wow!", the show component of National Day Parade 2010 draws its inspiration from the Singapore flag.

This year's show component promises to be a visual treat with colourful costumes, high energy performances and giant props.

Dick Lee, creative director, NDP 2010, said: "Every year the committee goes to see a Cirque du Soleil show. What is that, if not theatricality? I have been telling the creative team, everything (should be) bigger, bolder, grander music, everything has to be almost exaggerated because you need to fill that space."

The show segment will open with a performance of the theme song - "Song for Singapore" - composed by homegrown singer-songwriter, Corrinne May.

Four minutes of fireworks will round off the celebrations and for the first time, they'll come in a 360-degree display.

Sean Tan, chairman, NDP 2010 Fireworks Committee, said: "On top of the traditional Marina Bay fireworks, we will also be firing at eight other locations. The buildings will span from Suntec City, Ritz Carlton, Pan Pacific, MayBank, UOB Plaza, as well as Esplanade, City Hall and the Padang area."

Another highlight - "One Voice 2010" - will build on last year's pledge moment where thousands of Singaporeans came together to recite the national pledge.

Col Siew Kum Wong, chairman, NDP 2010 Show Committee, said: "It comprises both the pledge as well as the national anthem which we think is a very comprehensive way for us Singaporeans to rededicate ourselves to the country."

"One Voice 2010" will take place at exactly 8.10pm.

Multimedia elements will also be used to get spectators to sing along to a YouTube-style video of "Stand Up for Singapore."

Another important element of this year's parade are the motivators. Some 600 of them from Touch Community Services will be on hand to cheer on the crowd and rally the performers.

The location at the Padang also lends grandeur and added significance to the event, as a reminder of Singapore's struggle on the road to independence.

Creative director, Dick Lee, said: "The floating platform represents all that's new; and the Padang represents our heritage. So that was my direction. And then after that, when we went on to have our workshops. The committees all expressed one thing in common, one thing that was unanimous – the heart. The heart had to come through."

This is the second time Mr Lee is directing the NDP show after his first stint in 2002.

Other highlights include a choir that will showcase both singing and dancing as well as a YouTube-style mass sing-along with audience participation. - CNA/vm
