like korea, jp also borrowed heavily from han and tang languages during their zeniths. ichi ni san shi go roku. spoken han and tang were unlike mandarin today. they are closer to southern languages as the north migrated to south during multiple invasions by mongols, khitans, jurchens, and manchus.
