Fabio Capello is pushing to be appointed as the next Chelsea manager but is also weighing up a highly-lucrative offer to become the head coach of the United Arab Emirates. A decision on the future of the former England manager is imminent.
Along with Rafael Benítez, Glenn Hoddle and Gianfranco Zola, the 65-year-old Italian was considered as a short-term replacement after Andre Villas-Boas was sacked in March before Roberto Di Matteo was chosen as interim head coach until the end of the season.
Di Matteo will fly out to Munich today with the Chelsea squad for the Champions League final not knowing whether it is his last game in charge of the team. His only chance of retaining the job, and even then it would probably only be a one- year-deal, is to win the trophy and secure Chelsea a place in next season’s competition.
Even if he is successful, Di Matteo is believed to not hold out much hope that he will be given the job on a full-time basis and is being linked with a move to the Italian club Lazio.
Capello’s representatives have been back in contact with Chelsea to inquire whether he could be considered as a full-time appointment now that the season is drawing to a close. Interestingly, although Chelsea are not treating Capello as a leading candidate at present, the club are understood to have divulged information about their training ground and facilities.
Capello has also made it clear to Chelsea that he would be willing to overhaul the squad and make the changes in personnel that Roman Abramovich still appears keen to push through this summer, with Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda among the players expected to leave. Capello also has made no secret of the fact that he wants to return to England and has kept an eye on Harry Redknapp’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.

Capello recently said: “I have refused good offers from clubs in China and other parts of the world.
"I want one more challenge with a big team able to fight for trophies.”
