Taipei, March 26 (CAN) The Taiwan High Court on Wednesday sentenced former Investigation Bureau Director-General Yeh Sheng-mao to a year in jail for leaking confidential information, reversing an acquittal by a lower court.

Yeh's sentence was commuted to six months and he can pay fines in lieu of serving the sentence, according to the verdict.

The ruling is final, and Yeh cannot appeal. Yeh's lawyer described the sentence as too harsh, but he said his client will respect the court's decision.

Yeh was indicted for passing confidential information provided by the Egmont Group on the money-laundering activities of family members of former President Chen Shui-bian to Chen personally.

The high court found Yeh guilty because he admitted passing the confidential information during investigations by prosecutors and during trials at the Taipei District Court and the Taiwan High Court.

Yeh previously was sentenced to three years and eight months in jail in two other cases involving leaks of confidential information but was freed on parole last August after serving just under two years in prison.
