An “armed and dangerous” double-murder suspect accused of bludgeoning his two teenage nephews to death in the United States on Friday was arrested in a dramatic swoop at Hong Kong International Airport on Saturday night.

After receiving information from the US authorities, Hong Kong police picked up 44-year-old Chinese national, Deyun Shi, as he stepped off a Cathay Pacific flight from Los Angeles shortly after 5pm.

He was taken from the airport to North Lantau Hospital for medical checks.

It is understood Shi – who was flying business class – was trying to get back into the mainland in a bid to block his return to the US, which does not have an extradition treaty with China.

However, Hong Kong has had a mutual legal assistance deal in place with Washington which allows the transfer of fugitives between the two places since January 1998.

A police spokeswoman said they could not comment on an individual case.

Shi is suspected of killing two teenage boys, aged 14 and 15, in Arcadia, a city in Los Angeles county,

The boys, who were Shi’s nephews, suffered from “blunt force trauma” and were discovered by police on Friday afternoon.

Shi, who police consider “armed and dangerous”, is also wanted for a spousal assault that took place 24 hours before the alleged killings.

Police in the US said she could not say whether the department or other US law enforcement bodies had been in touch with mainland Chinese counterparts about the case. Mainland public security authorities could not be reached for comment.

China is pushing the US to return its citizens that it suspects of fleeing corruption investigations at home.
