SINGAPORE - A 66-year-old man has been sentenced to five years' jail on Friday (Jan 8) for his part in the murder of 37-year-old Dexmon Chua, whose body was found dumped at Lim Chu Kang on Jan 1, 2014.

Former cleaning supervisor Chua Leong Aik pleaded guilty to plotting with his friend, Chia Kee Chen, 55, to abduct and cause grievous hurt to the younger man.

The two men are believed to have acted along with Indonesian national Djatmiko Febri Irwansyah, who is still at large.

Channel NewsAsia reported that Chia had promised Febri a fish culturing business after he committed the deed. Febri was helping him run a fish farm in Tanjung Pinang at that time.

The crime, which took place in December 2013, was triggered after Chia discovered his 49-year-old wife's affair with the victim in 2012.

According to Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao, the pair, who were then colleagues, started dating in July, 2011.

Although the pair ended their affair a year later, Chia discovered their relationship when he chanced upon their messages on his wife's mobile phone.

Chia's wife confessed to the affair and added that she was afraid that the victim would publicise photos and videos of them having sex, the report said.

Chia then confronted the victim over the phone to warn him against contacting his wife, threatening that he would receive a beating if he did so.

However, in 2013, the victim accidentally sent Chia's wife a New Year's greeting on the eve of Chinese New Year. He then sent another message to apologise for sending the greeting to the wrong person.

That was enough for Chia to fly into a rage and he began to quarrel with his wife.

Lianhe Wanbao added that in April the same year, the victim had suspected Chia of stalking him, and even made two police reports against him.

On Dec 28, 2013, Chia, Chua and Febri cornered the victim in a multi-storey carpark in Block 429A, Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4.

The Chinese daily reported that Chia even asked the victim if he remembered him.

According to Channel NewsAsia, the trio then forced the victim into the back of a borrowed van, where Chia and Febri began electrocuting him with electrodes.

They also tied him up and beat him.

Channel NewsAsia added that Chua had started to drive towards Lim Chu Kang on Chia's instructions, but alighted soon after to take a bus back home. He said that he "smelt the scent of blood" in the van and eventually "could not take it anymore". When he alighted, he noted that the victim's legs were still moving slightly.

The victim, who was reported missing, was eventually found on Jan 1, 2014 at a military training area near Sungei Gedong Camp. His body was discovered with his hands bound, and his T-shirt pulled up to his neck.

According to an autopsy, the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and face area.

Lianhe Wanbao reported that by the time the body was found, it was highly decomposed and covered with maggots. The victim's scalp had been seriously damaged, and his eyes, absent.

According to Channel NewsAsia, the defence counsel had asked for a sentence of four years' imprisonment for Chua, but the prosecution argued for five, on the basis that Chua knew of the plan's intention to harm.

SINGAPORE - A 55-year-old man whose wife confessed that she had an affair with a colleague after he confronted her over romantic text messages on her phone, told her lover to end the relationsip or he will beat him up, the High Court heard on Friday.

When Chia Kee Chen's wife got a Chinese New Year greeting message on WhatsApp from her former lover, he allegedly began stalking the colleague, Mr Dexmon Chua Yizhi, 37.

Chia also roped in two people - longtime friend Chua Leong Aik and business partner Febri Irwansyah Djatmiko - to allegedly exact revenge on Mr Chua, who was electrocuted and eventually killed.

Chia has been charged with murdering Mr Chua in December 2013 and his trial has been scheduled to start in October.

But details about the crime emerged on Friday when his accomplice Chua was sentenced to five years' jail after pleading guilty to abduction and causing grievous hurt by dangerous means.

Chua, 66, a town council cleaning supervisor, admitted that late at night on Dec 28, 2013, the trio carried out their plan to abduct and beat up Mr Chua to "teach him a lesson".

They assaulted him after he parked his car at a multi-storey carpark near his Choa Chu Kang flat and pushed him into the back of a borrowed van. They then used electrodes to electrocute him and tied him up.

As Chua drove the van to Lim Chu Kang as instructed by Chia, the other two men continued beating the victim up in the back of the van, the court heard.

Chua said he "could not take it anymore" and got out from the van near Lim Chu Kang and took a bus home.

The other two men drove the van to a Singapore Armed Forces live firing area and dumped the victim's lifeless body there. Febri and Chia's family left Singapore shortly after.

When he returned two days later, Chia was arrested. He later led police to the area where he had dumped the victim's body.

On Friday, Chua's lawyer, Mr James Ow Yong, asked for four years' jail, saying that his client played a minimal role.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Wen Hsien asked for five years, arguing that Chua must have known that the plan would involve violence and serious harm to the victim.

Febri is still at large.

Accomplice gets five years' jail after admitting his involvement in 2013 murder

After confronting his wife about romantic text messages she had received and hearing her confess to an affair with a colleague, a 55-year-old businessman told her lover to end the relationship or risk a beating.

Two months later, Chia Kee Chen was agitated when his wife received a Chinese New Year greeting on WhatsApp from her former lover, Mr Dexmon Chua Yizhi, 37.

Though Mr Chua immediately apologised for the mistake, Chia allegedly began stalking him, making Mr Chua feel so spooked that he made a police report.

In December 2013, more than a year after the affair had ended, Chia allegedly roped in two people - long-time friend Chua Leong Aik and Indonesian business partner Febri Irwansyah Djatmiko - to exact revenge on the ex-lover.

Chia has been charged with murdering Mr Chua and his trial is scheduled to start in October.

But details of the crime emerged in the High Court yesterday when his accomplice, Chua, was sentenced to five years' jail after pleading guilty to abduction and causing grievous hurt by dangerous means.

Chua, 66, a town council cleaning supervisor, admitted that on Dec 28, 2013, the trio carried out their plan to abduct and beat up Mr Chua to "teach him a lesson".

The plan was allegedly hatched by Chia, who sought revenge against the victim for his affair with his wife, Madam Serene Goh, 49.

The court heard that Madam Goh, then a sales executive, got to know Mr Chua, a material analyst who worked in the same packaging company. As they lived in the same area, Mr Chua started taking her home in July 2011. The next month, they started an affair, which had ended by July 2012.

But it came to light in November 2012, when Chia found text messages from Mr Chua to his wife.

She confessed and told her husband that there were photographs and videos of them having sex.

Later that day, Chia phoned Mr Chua, hurling vulgarities at him and threatening to beat him up. After this, Madam Goh told her husband where her ex-lover lived and pointed him out to Chia when he fetched her home from work.

The court heard that Mr Chua lodged two police reports over abusive phone calls and being stalked.

On Dec 24, Chia allegedly asked Febri to help him kill Mr Chua, promising to help the Indonesian set up his own business.

Febri arrived here on Dec 26. The next day, the trio met at an electrical sub-station near where Mr Chua lived to discuss the plan.

On the night of Dec 28, Chia allegedly drove a borrowed van to the sub-station. He had two knives, an electrode, a torchlight and gloves. He allegedly told Chua that he needed his help as the person who "bullied" his wife was "big-sized".

The trio then lay in wait at a multi-storey carpark near the victim's Choa Chu Kang flat. They cornered him at about 1am after he had parked his car, assaulted him and forced him into the back of the van.

Febri allegedly used the electrode to electrocute the victim, who fainted. Chia and Febri then allegedly tied the victim's hands and feet and continued beating him while Chua drove the van to Lim Chu Kang.

After some time, Chua told Chia that he "could not take it any more". He left the van near Lim Chu Kang and took a bus home.

Chia allegedly took over the wheel and drove to a military live-firing area, where they dumped the body.

Later that day, he and Febri left for Malaysia. The latter is still at large. Chia was arrested when he and his family returned two days later.

On Jan 1, 2014, he led the police to Mr Chua's body. An autopsy found multiple fractures on the victim's face, skull and ribs.

Yesterday, Chua's lawyer, Mr James Ow Yong, asked for four years' jail, saying that his client had played a minimal role. Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Wen Hsien asked for five years, saying Chua knew the plan would involve violence and serious harm to the victim, but went along with it.
