China has lifted its ban on Taiwanese physicians but Taiwan still bans China's lawyers, our sister newspaper Commercial Times reported on Oct. 30.

Taiwan has asked China to lift more than 80 bans on Taiwanese products and professions, while China has asked Taiwan to lift its ban on lawyers so that Chinese legal consultants can be stationed in Taiwan.

Commercial Times quoted an anonymous source who said Beijing has not asked for lawyers to be allowed to practice, but only to offer consulting services.

The request has been officially turned down, Commercial Times reported.

The decision by the Chinese government to allow Taiwanese physicians to practice in China, however, is a worry for Taiwan's government as the country is already experiencing a shortage of medical workers and physicians could be lured across the strait by the prospect of higher pay.
