SINGAPORE - A taxi driver is under police investigation for making a false report last month.

On July 27 at about 11pm, the 31-year-old woman made a call to the 999 emergency hotline. She said that she had been threatened by a passenger with a pointed object and ordered to drive to Chin Bee, which is in an industrial part of Jurong. She claimed that she complied and the passenger then fled.

"In the course of investigations, officers from Tanglin Division detected many inconsistencies and established that the woman had provided false information to the police by claiming she was threatened by another person," the police said in a press release on Wednesday (Aug 10).

Knowingly giving false information to public servants carries a maximum penalty of one year's imprisonment and a $5,000 fine.

Police reminded the public to refrain from lodging false reports because they expend resources that could be spent on real crimes and emergencies.
