THE organiser of the beleaguered Bishan bazaar, Mr Ronnie Oh, has been arrested for allegedly outraging the modesty of one of his workers. A police spokesman said on Friday that they received a call requesting help in Bishan Road on Tuesday at about 5pm. He added that a man, in his 50s, was later arrested on suspicion of outrage of modesty - an offence which carries a maximum punishment of two years' jail. The culprit may also be fined or caned. The man is now on bail. Mr Oh did not answer repeated calls to his mobile phone on Friday.

Businessman faces molestation

<!-- by line -->

THE man behind the Bishan Chinese New Year Carnival was charged in court on Thursday with molesting a woman. Ronnie Oh Yin Yan, 49, is accused of pulling the hands of a 26-year-old beer promoter and making her sit at his lap, at the main office of the bazaar in Bishan Street 13 on Feb 9. He made the news earlier this year when his sprawling bazaar next to the Bishan bus interchange, touted as one of the biggest Chinese New Year fairs in town, ran into problems.

The 200,000 sq ft fair was intended to house at least 500 stalls, but only half the number were taken up. Oh, who is represented by Mr Anthony Lim, had his police bail of $8,000 extended. A pre-trial conference has been set for April 26. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to two years or fine or caning or any combination of the punishments.

Man cleared of molest charge

By Elena Chong

A COURT cleared a man on Tuesday of molesting a 26-year-old woman after his case was compounded for $10,000. Ronnie Oh Yin Yan, 50, was acquitted of using criminal force by pulling the businesswoman's hands and causing her to sit on his laps at the main office of Bishan Chinese New Year Carnival at Bishan Street 13 on Feb 9. Deputy Public Prosecutor Public Edward Ti told the court that the matter had been compounded for $10,000 and Oh had also apologised to the victim, who was in court.

Oh was the man behind the beleaguered Bishan bazaar, which was held next to the Bishan bus interchange earlier this this year. Touted as one of the biggest Chinese New Year fairs in town, the 200,000 sq ft fair was intended to house at least 500 stalls, but only half the number were taken up. The fair also failed to draw the 300,000 people expected to attend the month-long event.
