SINGAPORE: Some Singaporeans, whose passports might have a printing glitch, made their way to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) Building on Thursday to have them rectified.

1,280 passports that was printed and issued to Singaporeans between 23 May and 3 June this year might have a printing glitch, said ICA.

While the error does not render the passports invalid, ICA said there are high security standards that must be met.

The ICA is getting in touch with all affected individuals by phone. As of 8pm Thursday, 953 of them have been contacted and 42% of these have had their passports verified and rectified.

ICA's head for public & internal communications, Chia Hui Keng, said: "Basically the problem is a printing alignment issue. So what we intend to do is get them (affected passport holders) to come to us quickly so we can get the passports verified and get the problem rectified as soon as possible. This is to prevent any inconvenience to them when they travel overseas."

Affected passport holders MediaCorp spoke to said the rectifying procedure was smooth and took no more than ten minutes.

But the trip down to Kallang, where the ICA Building is located, proved to be inconvenient for some.

"For me, not very convenient...because of my walking problem. The waiting time is not long," said an affected individual.

"They told (us) that it takes five minutes, but it took (less than) five minutes for them to call my daughter's name," said another.

"They gave me this (pewter keychain - ICA's token of appreciation). Not bad, they (the staff) were polite. They apologised for the inconvenience and I said, 'it's all right'," said a third person.

There was not much of a queue at the ICA Building on Thursday, but the staff are prepared for bigger crowds.

Those from other units have been deployed to work beyond office hours.
