The police on Monday arrested a 50-year-old man suspected of committing robbery with hurt near Hougang Avenue 1, less than 20 hours after the crime was reported.

On Sunday evening at about 10pm, a 36-year-old man lodged a police report stating that he was assaulted and robbed of his handphone by an unknown person.

Through investigations and with the aid of footage from CCTV cameras mounted in the area and information provided by residents, the police established the suspect's identity and arrested him near Ang Mo Kio Avenue 9 at about 5.30pm on Monday.

If convicted of Robbery with Hurt, he faces a jail term of up to 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
