Police have arrested 75 shoplifters at shopping malls along Orchard Road in the first three months of the year.

The suspects are aged between 13 and 73, and had stolen nearly $11,000 worth of retail items, including groceries, clothing and branded goods such as handbags.

The police have been working closely with retailers to deter and detect theft in their outlets.

Many retailers have enhanced their security measures through better training of their staff and strategic placement of CCTV cameras.

More offenders have also been apprehended as a result of stepped-up enforcement by retailers.

In a statement today, the police reminded the public that shop theft is a serious offence that is punishable with imprisonment of up to seven years and a fine.

Retailers are advised to take the following measures against shop theft:

- Display expensive items in locked display shelves accessible only by staff

- If it is not feasible to lock these items in display shelves, use empty boxes and cans instead of the real merchandise

- Enhance the store's security system by installing CCTV cameras and convex mirrors. Ensure that the CCTV cameras are in good working condition

- Use an electronic tagging system

- Display advisory signage or warnings against shop theft at prominent locations

- Advise all staff to be observant and vigilant
