CHIANG RAI - Four members of a major drug trafficking gang in the North have been arrested with more than one million methamphetamine pills (yaba) in Mae Chan district.

This was announced at a press conference on Monday by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung and Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew, the new police chief.

The four suspects, led by Chamnong Yeobo, 36, were arrested in a joint operation of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau and Region 5 Provincial police in the northern province of Chiang Rai on Sunday. The three other suspects were Sombat Srisongsom, 50, Navasit Sitthishadok, 38, and Narathip Pochae, 33.

Apart from the 1,094,000 yaba pills, the police also seized two pick-up trucks, one motorcycle and four mobile phones.

The suspects allegedly said that the drugs were smuggled from a neighbouring country and were hidden in a farm in Mae Chan.

The drugs were intended to be distributed for sales in Bang Na area and Nakhon Pathom province and that the suspects were paid three baht for each of the pills delivered to clients.

They were charged with having drugs in possession with intent to sell.
