A 23-year-old man was killed in front of his parents on a busy road in west Delhi, allegedly by family members of a woman he was courting, police said on Friday.

Ankit Saxena, a wedding photographer, had his throat slit by a sharp weapon and was declared brought dead at a hospital, said Vijay Kumar, the deputy commissioner of police (west).

The family of the woman, identified only by her first name Shehzadi (20), was opposed to her relationship with Saxena as they were from different communities.

The woman’s mother and uncle were caught by some people at the incident site at Raghubir Nagar and handed over to police. Her father was caught by police later on Thursday and his minor brother was arrested on Friday afternoon.

Following the incident, a large contingent of police was deployed at the tense locality to prevent any communal conflagration.

Saxena and Shehzadi lived in the same neighbourhood and were in a relationship for two years. Shehzadi is a second-year undergraduate student at DU’s School of Open Learning.

“The woman’s parents opposed their relationship. In the past, the two families had tried to dissuade their children from meeting each other even though the man’s parents did not object much to their relationship,” said the DCP, refusing to name the accused due to the “sensitivity” of the case.

“The woman’s parents wanted her to get engaged to someone else, but the woman was unwilling,” said the DCP. She told police that she wanted to marry Saxena.

On Thursday, Saxena had left his home in a car for some work when he was intercepted by the woman’s family on the road near his home around 8 pm. “They blamed Saxena for regular disappearance of the woman from her home. Saxena pleaded innocence and demanded that the matter be discussed in police presence, but they began beating him,” alleged Sarika, a neighbour.

Someone alerted Saxena’s parents who immediately rushed to their son’s aid.

“When I tried to rescue my son, the woman’s mother thrashed me. My son tried to save me, but the woman’s uncle and brother held him by his arms. Her father then used a knife to slit his throat from behind. He collapsed seconds later,” Kamlesh alleged.

By the time Kamlesh and her husband could convince an e-rickshaw driver to help move Saxena to hospital, over 20 minutes were lost. He was declared brought dead at a hospital.

Every year many people are killed in India, often by family members, for allegedly bringing “dishonour” to the family by marrying or through romantic liaisons against set societal norms.

Activists say such crimes are under-reported and many such killings are covered up. Convictions for such crimes are also very rare.
