SINGAPORE - A 20-year-old woman has been arrested for suspected involvement in pretending to be a police investigating officer.

The police had received a report on Mar 30 at about 9.35pm where a member of the public said she received a phone call from a woman claiming to be an investigation officer, said a police statement today.

The caller told her that a police report had been filed against her for failing to repay a monetary loan, and demanded that she return the loan owed.

Acting on the information received, officers from Jurong Division established the identity of the caller and arrested her on Apr 5 at Woodlands.

Investigations are on-going.

The offence of impersonating a public servant carries a jail term which may extend to 2 years, or with a fine, or both.

The police would like to remind the public to be vigilant and wary of persons who may impersonate as police officers to facilitate the commission of their criminal acts.

If in doubt, they should request for the police officer's warrant card to verify his identity before complying with the instructions of the officer. A genuine warrant card will have identification features such as the police crest, the photo of the officer, his name and NRIC number.

When the card is tilted at an angle, the holographic word "POLICE" will also appear below the officer's photograph.

If they are still unsure of the person's credibility as a police officer, they should call 999 for assistance.
