Second accused in Kaki Bukit dorm fight gets 1 week’s jail

SINGAPORE: The second man implicated in last month's Kaki Bukit dormitory fight has been sentenced to one week's jail for grabbing the shirt of another worker during a confrontation.

Arumugam Velmurugan, 28, admitted to aggressively grabbing the shirt of Ahsan Habib Md Fazlan Rahman on March 5, at around 11.15pm, at Homestay Residences on Kaki Bukit Avenue 3.

The incident happened when Ahsan Habib went to confront Arumugam's friend, Indian national Dharmaraj Ramesh.

Dharmaraj, who was drinking beer with the accused and three others in the dormitory canteen, had walked past a large group of Bangladeshi workers who were watching a cricket match at the same time.

But Dharmaraj became irritated with the noise they were making and threw an empty beer can at Ahsan Habib, who was among the group.

That sparked a confrontation which snowballed into a brawl.

Arumugam also admitted to one other charge of using threatening words at Ahsan Habib.

Dharmaraj was the first of 17 men implicated in the case to be convicted and sentenced.

One of the 17 has been discharged, while the remaining 14 who have been accused will have their cases heard later. - CNA/nd/gn

SINGAPORE - Eight Bangladeshi workers have been cleared of rioting in a dormitory after a fight with another group - which is thought to have erupted over the result of a cricket match.

The eight, aged 26 to 38, were given a discharge amounting to an acquittal on Tuesday for being part of the assembly with six others to cause hurt to three Indian nationals at the Homestay Residence Dormitory.

The two groups were among 35 foreign workers who were arrested after a mass brawl broke out on March 25 at the dormitory in Kaki Bukit Avenue 3.

Police had earlier said in a statement that the fight took place during the screening of a live cricket match, understood to have been between Bangladesh and the West Indies.
