Pre-season friendly tour results are not bad.

Malaysia 2 Manchester United 3
Indonesia v. Manchester United (cancelled)
Malaysia 0 Manchester United 2

Michael Owen, the controversial new signing, scored in both games.

Was at 1st match last sat over in KL. No discredit to Msia X11, but saw "live" 2 silly goals by VDS and BF (the latter was horrendous).

MO had a great reception, with closeup tv shot on a fan with Owen on his back:p His goal was in his imitable style.

I got this feeling that Sir Alex has spotted something again. I was very sceptical when he signed Teddy Sheringham about 10 years ago when Sheringham was supposedly at the tail-end of his Tottenham Hotspur and England career. It worked out and proved to be a success with triple top trophies. If Michael Owen works out well, Sir Alex maybe promoted to Lord Ferguson for what it's worth.

SAF's punt, what has he got to lose (what with all the inflated OTT pricing elsewhere)? For MO, he's got everything to gain:biggrin:

Yeah, nothing to lose in a free transfer for one of England's top players of all time who's still not yet 30, as I've mentioned in http://www.sammyboy.com/showpost.php?p=272525&postcount=16

If he's not recalled for England, that'll be an even bigger bonus for Sir Alex and Manchester United, as he can concentrate on playing and scoring for MU. Just like when Eric Cantona was discarded by France, his form went up tremendously for MU in the mid 90s.

If he fails to shine, nothing to lose, it's a transfer. There's enough savings (from Owen's free transfer) and profits (from Ronaldo's sale) in the MU kitty to afford any player Sir Alex wants on earth if he needs.

I can't wait for the season to start
and to see Owen scoring the winner against loserpool at the
THEATRE OF DREAMS!!

Ferdinand pleased by Owen capture

Rio Ferdinand is backing Michael Owen to fire Manchester United to glory this season.
As a regular team-mate of Owen's with England, Ferdinand is acutely aware of the 29-year-old's predatory instincts and Ferdinand knows Owen could turn out to be a major factor in United's pursuit of an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League championship.

Owen was brought in from relegated Newcastle United following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez from Old Trafford. After the England hitman suffered injury and fitness problems during his spell with the Magpies, news of the transfer to United was met by scepticism from some sections, but Ferdinand is hoping the move will mark a fresh start for his team-mate.
"He is one of those players you might not see for 90 minutes but in time added on, he will score a goal," said Ferdinand. "Those are the type of players you need to win things."

He added: "It is great to have him in our squad because he is such a good player and a fantastic lad to have around. Fingers crossed he can have an injury free season and score some goals for us.

"The lads get a great buzz out of seeing someone like Michael Owen score goals.

"When he signed for the club there were a lot of doubters out there. People were saying all kinds of things about him. We have heard it all. But the players go in there with an open mind and just hope to see the player we know Michael can be."

The good thing about Owen is that he is the only player of his "type" currently at Old Trafford.
Berbatov is more of a target man "flick on" type of striker, Rooney is a runner and creator, Macheda seems to be more of a skilled explosive type of player. Owen is a pure scorer.

Caught MU's final tour match live on telly last night (away from starhub). As scoreline suggests, opposition's defence was in shambles. 2 consolation goals by HGTFC were not bad though, 1st header and 2nd oustide box.

Good run-in to real competition, and Giggsy scored with his usual left foot. Park could also have scored but was selfless near in goalmouth by passing on.

Great to see no stepping off the gas, players taking potshots despite easy goaline 1st half. And looks like potentially good ROI for MO so far:biggrin:

Sir Alex said he's expecting 15 goals from Michael Owen this season. I think that's classic British understatement and double finger-crossing. I think that a target of 20 goals is a more realistic expectation with any sense of challenge, and even that's on the conservative side.

The Manchester United football team was the target of a bomb attack on the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Jakarta two weeks ago, according to a message posted on the internet purporting to be from Indonesia's most wanted terrorist suspect Noordin Mohammed Top.

The message, in which Malaysian born Noordin claims responsibility for the twin hotel bombings that killed seven people, confirms that the Ritz was targeted by a suicide bomber because it was about to host "the Crusaders" Manchester United who were due to play an exhibition match in Jakarta.

It says the attack was a warning to Indonesians "against the arrival of the soccer club Manchester United" at the hotel.

"These players are Christians, so Muslims should not honour and respect these enemies of Allah," it said.

Jemaah Islamiyah behind Jakarta suicide bombs;

The posting, written in Indonesian and Arabic, claims the attacks on the Ritz and the Marriott hotels were specifically aimed at American interests and US allies.

Dedicated to two dead heroes of Noordin's group, an offshoot of the radical Islamist organisation Jemaah Islamiyah, it says the attacks targeted "the head figures of business and intelligence within the US economy."

It also refers to the "American chamber of commerce" as a target, apparently confirming that a breakfast meeting of Western businessmen at the Marriott, hosted by US lobbyist James Castle, was specifically targeted. The breakfast meeting suffered heavy fatalities on July 17, with three Australians and a New Zealander killed in the explosions.

"They have major interests in sucking Indonesia's treasure and financing the US army to fight against Muslims and Islam," the message said.

Manchester United abandoned its planned game against an Indonesian all-star side after the bombings. The posting described the team as "salibis", or Christian crusaders, who were unworthy of the support of Muslims.

The posting has not been independently verified but is described as "plausible" by Sidney Jones, the Jakarta based analyst for the International Crisis Group. Indonesian police are examining the posting, which carried Noordin's name and identified his group as "Al Qae'da in Indonesia."

The group claims to have carried out extensive research before carrying out the bombings, and promises to release video footage of the suicide bombers' statements.

Ms Jones said the posting was made plausibe by the mention of Noordin's accomplice Azahari bin Husin, an explosives expert killed by Indonesian police in 2005 and Jabir, a student of Azahari's who is believed to have helped recurit the 2005 Bali bombers.

"The argument that he uses the citations from the Koran, the way that he says that these martyrdom operations were conducted in the name of Azahari, the former partner of his who was killed in 2005, and Jabir, another very close associate of his who was also killed, in 2006; that makes sense as a statement of Noordin's interests and views," she said.

Earlier this week, an Indonesian woman learned that her husband Abdul Halim, who she had beleived was an ordinary husband - albeit one who travelled a lot for his work - was the terrorist Noordin, who is also wanted in connection with an earlier bombing of the Marriott in 2003, and sucide attacks in Jakarta and Bali in 2004 and 2005.

Arina Rahma had learnt from media reports that her husband, a public affairs worker who used to help her cook and bathe her children, was the most wanted Islamist terrorist in South East Asia

Mickey's arrival at OT reminds me of one Louis Saha who use to be a Newcastle player before his move to Fulham.

I bet Mickey will breakdown at some point and United will be left with a striker short. The pay as you play agreement with the player was to ensure that Utd dun end up being a sucker for the third time.

Utd is in need of a quality striker.Huntelaar is Utd's best chance and Mahmoud Diarra would be a good replacement for Hargreaves who is likely to miss the season yet again.

Train and spot someone from youth academy, like Giggs, Scholes and Beckham from MU or Fowler, Gerrard and Owen from Liverpool, that's best long-term option I think.
