[h=1]Wenger: Winning 'not critical'[/h]Arsene Wenger believes it is not essential for Arsenal to qualify for the Champions League.

Arsenal travel to Udinese on Wednesday night in the second leg of their qualifier, with a slim 1-0 lead from the first leg.
With the Gunners having made a slow start to the season, many believe the game in Italy is crucial for the success of the season ahead. Wenger does not agree.
"It's not critical," Wenger said, "it's for us an opportunity to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, so it's a good opportunity.
"What's at stake is for us to qualify and I think we can only do it with the players we have at the moment, who are good enough to achieve that."
Arsenal agreed the sale of Samir Nasri to Manchester City on Tuesday, which Wenger himself admits was not ideal timing, as it leaves them short of numbers in midfield.
However, Wenger did confirm that Arsenal would strengthen their squad in the remaining week of the transfer window.
"We will strengthen our squad of course, in the coming weeks," confirmed Wenger
"Hopefully we can manage to do that...We're working very hard in the transfer market, of course. We're short in midfield and that's where we want to strengthen."
Wenger has again delved into the reasons why they sold Fabregas and their decision to agree a deal with City for Nasri.
The Gunners boss believes it was logical to sell Nasri for financial and psychological reasons.
"The summer was very difficult because we had Fabregas and Nasri in permanent transfer negotiations," Wenger said.
"That is draining in the end. We lost two great players but, at some stage, it has to be over because you want to focus on the future.
"You want players who are completely committed to the long-term. We wanted to sort all these cases out very early after the summer but it wasn't possible. The pace is not only dictated by us.
"We knew at the end of the season we could lose Nasri but it did last for too long. Now is not the ideal moment to do it, but it is a moment."
He added: "Football rules are made like that, that the player can be worth a lot of money today and nothing in six months.
"So it doesn't look completely logical but, at the end of the day, of course, we are forced into a decision like that for psychological and financial reasons."

The thing is that Arsenal is about to be knocked out of the CL by Udinese later tonight. Add one Alexis Sanchez to confirm that but he has since joined Europe's best.

Wenger is very good coach... Changed Arsenal from boring boring Arsenal of the 80s to an exciting swashbuckling Arsenal of Henry, Bergkamp, Viera, and Ljunberg... Pitied the man.. Maybe has lost the midas touch.. Think we'll see the end of Wenger's era this season..:(

yup bro..whatever it is, he leaves a legacy..being the only team to win the league without defeat in a season.

He shld have built on the success of that team...I simply don't understand why.

Last year they were brilliant until they fell apart. And the team is crying out for a goalie...which he stoutly refuse to sign. I dun understand why.

I know for 1 thing is that under AW, Arsenal have cleared of the $900 million debt of building the Emirates Stadium, thats one of the reason why he refused to spend after Henry departure., credit to him.

Sir Alex Ferguson was right when he once remarked that Arsene Wenger wants to be known as the 'Great' one. This guy is letting his ego get in the way of the job.
There were a lot of good that he has achieved for the club both on and off the field. What he failed to understand is that the Gunners failure for the past seven seasons and counting, would have dire ramifications on other areas of the club's operations-commercial,marketing and gate receipts.
Money aside, Wenger has tried (and is still trying) to replicate what Barca has achieved with the youth team. Had he come up with the 'perfect team' and won some silverware, he would have won the plaudits of his critics and who knows acclaimed as the premier league's manager of the century, a genius, blah, blah, blah and surpassing even the 'great' SAF.

He had a tacit arrangement with the shareholders then that the team as with the new stadium will be build from the ground up and as such the board of would resist any calls for his resignation should he fail to win any trophy. The whole process would save XXX pounds for the club and Arsene would appraise himself.
Mourinho hit the nail on the head afew seasons ago when he said that Arsenal is the only club(top 4) that has zero expectation of their manager-no KPI.

Ferguson jumps to Wenger's defence

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has jumped to the defence of his under-fire Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger.

The pair's rivalry has been one of greatest spectacles in the Premier League over the years. But with the Gunners falling off the pinacle of English football, a sense of friendship has prevailed between Ferguson and Wenger. The Frenchman has arguably hit one of the lowest points of his 15-year reign with the club - both on and off the pitch, having lost Cesc Fabregas Barcelona and now Samir Nasri to Manchester City - all in the matter of weeks.

Now Ferguson has defended his old foe and insists he has done an 'unbelievable' job at Arsenal. "It's a crazy world we're in. It's a critical world and you only need to lose a couple of games to have critics howling down at you," he was quoted as saying in The Sun newspaper. "All the talk is about Arsenal and Arsene leaving. But who can replace him? It's the most ridiculous situation.

"The man has been simply unbelievable. He has given Arsenal platforms they never thought they'd get to. "He should carry on. He shouldn't listen to the critics. The one thing you need in this game is ear plugs." Arsenal travel to Italy for the second leg of their Champions League qualifiers against Udinese on Wedneday night, taking a 1-0 aggregate lead.

Wenger's time is up !

Arsenal’s defensive woes were cruelly exposed by a rampant Manchester United who took the Gunners apart at Old Trafford in a comprehensive 8-2 victory.

Arsenal's only win in their last nine league games came when these two met at the Emirates Stadium on May Day, but any hopes this was a lucky omen for a change in fortune for the Gunners was quickly dispelled as Arsene Wenger’s men found themselves 3-1 down at the break.

Woeful defending by the North London side was taken advantage of at every opportunity by a dominate Old Trafford outfit who never let Arsenal settle.

Danny Welbeck set the goal fest on its way as the visitor’s dithered at the back but then came the turning point of the game as Arsenal were given the opportunity to level the scores from the penalty spot after Theo Walcott was pulled back.

But a weak effort from Robin Van Persie was easily saved by David De Gea and within a minute the host’s had doubled their advantage.

Ashley Young collected the ball 20 yards out and curled a delightful effort past Wojciech Szczesny. On 41 minutes Wayne Rooney scored the first of three then Walcott gave Arsenal hope with a strike in first half injury time.

But any hopes Arsenal had learnt lessons from the opening 45 minutes were quickly dispelled as United went goal crazy.

Rooney made it four just after the hour then Nani dinked a cheeky chip over Szczesny with the Gunners rearguard in disarray.

Substitute Ji-Sung Park had barely made an appearance before he was on the score sheet.

Van Persie pulled another goal back for the visitor’s but this was hardly a consolation as United continued to score at will.

If Wenger thought things couldn’t get any worse Carl Jenkinson was shown red for a second yellow card for hauling down Hernandez.

Rooney claimed the match ball by dispatching a penalty after Patrice Evra was fouled and Young completed the scoring with his second of the afternoon in injury time.

Old Trafford was in raptures with chants of 'you're getting sacked in the morning' directed at the Arsenal boss who side’s shortcomings were well in evidence.

Referee: Howard Webb

Venue: Old Trafford

Attendance: 75,448

Man Utd scorers: Welbeck 22, Young 28, 90, Rooney 40, 64, 82(pen) Nani, 67, Park 70

Arsenal scorers: Walcott 45, Van Persie 74

Yellow cards: Djourou (ARS), Jenkinson (ARS), Arshavin (ARS), Young (MAN U), Evans (MAN U)

Red Cards: Jenkinson (Ars)

Arsenal board over-ruled Wenger over Nasri Man City sale

28.08.11 | tribalfootball.com

The Arsenal board over-ruled Arsene Wenger over the sale of Samir Nasri to Manchester City, it has been revealed.

The Sunday Express says Wenger, having accepted the £35m sale of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona, asked Emirates chief executive Ivan Gazidis to reconsider the club’s stance over French international Nasri.

He wanted to play Nasri, who had performed admirably in the Liverpool defeat on Saturday, against Udinese, especially with Jack Wilshere still injured.

Wenger was also in favour of allowing Nasri to run down his contract, meaning he would be available for what is evolving as a critical season for Wenger and the Gunners.

But the harsh financial facts of receiving £23m for a player entering the last year of his contract was too much to resist for the Arsenal beancounters.

Wenger believed the club was taking a massive gamble, especially with £25 million – the value of claiming a place in the Champions League – at stake in Italy last Wednesday night.

For once the Arsenal board went against their manager and sold Nasri to City, also in the knowledge that the player was anxious to leave.

**************************************************************************************************************
Now I wonder where they are going to get the players that they need. Every club is holding on to their prized players and Arse will have to pay well in excess of what they would normally be paying for the B list players. Macam Titanic all over again.
