Extra Time: Liam Gallagher bursts in on press conference to celebrate Manchester City's derby win

Former Oasis star, who will feel that his beloved side's 1-0 victory may 'Live Forever' in the memory, surprised journalists by walking in on the post-match interviews

Notorious Manchester City fan Liam Gallagher must have felt like he was 'Standing on the Shoulder of Giants' as he watched his beloved side beat Manchester United 1-0 in their crucial derby showdown.

The former Oasis star drew plenty of attention by striding triumphantly into the post-match press conference at the Etihad Stadium.

Perhaps fuelled by 'Cigarettes and Alcohol', Gallagher cast his Beady Eye over the assembled journalists (who seemed fine to 'Roll With It') before delivering his verdict on the temper-driven clash between managers Roberto Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson as tensions rode high towards the end of the game.

"He [Ferguson] must have been blinded by the lights. He must have been on the whisky too much," he announced to the stunned media, adding of City boss Mancini: "I love him. He's almost as cool as me."

As match-winner Vincent Kompany entered the room, Gallagher was not afraid to 'Go Let It Out', declaring: "He [Kompany] invited me to his box. He scored a blinder, his family is mega and his sister is really cool. Nice one, bro. Vive le Belgium!"

Clearly not a man who understands ‘the Importance of Being Idle’, the musician was not only causing a stir in front of the press.

After the game, Gallagher tweeted a picture of himself alongside a special guest at the game – 'Some Might Say' the game’s greatest ever player, Diego Maradona.

"Maradona shaking the hand of God," the 39-year-old captioned the image, with typical modesty, in the wake of a triumph that means that City will ... er, 'Definitely Maybe' go on to win the Premier League.

Former Arsenal defender Sol Campbell announces retirement

After making his debut for Tottenham 20 years ago and featuring in six major tournaments, the ex-England man has made the "very dificult" decision to hang up his boots

May 2, 2012 3:55:00 PM

By Edward Tibbles

169807hp2.jpg

Former England international defender Sol Campbell has announced his retirement from football at the age of 37, stressing that it was a "very difficult decision" to make.

Campbell featured for five different clubs, including Arsenal and Tottenham, and picked up 73 caps whilst making appearances in six major tournaments over his career.

Despite his credentials, he has been without a club since being released by Newcastle at the end of last season and has admitted that he put his retirement off.

"It was a very, very difficult decision to come to because it's hard to let go, especially when you have been a top sportsman for a long, long time," Campbell told Sky Sports News.

"It comes to all athletes around the world, you get to the age where your mind, your body and your spirit says enough is enough. You have to hang up your boots and call it a day.

"To get to my decision, it takes a long time. It is difficult for me to be here and say that's it, I'm not playing football on a professional level again.

"It takes a long time because of the work I have done over the years and being at the top, dedication, it's not easy to get to this. That's why I was putting it off for a long time."

"It was a very difficult decision because it's hard to let go, especially when you have been a top sportsman for a long, long time"

Campbell revealed that he had received offers at the start of 2011-12 from sides in both the Premier League and the Championship but decided against joining either because of injury.

"I had a few offers at the beginning of the season," he added. "They were mostly southern-based. One was a Premiership club who was coming up and another one have actually gone up this year from the Championship.

"I had a foot injury so I couldn't even play football at the time. I wouldn't really have done myself justice or the team that were looking at me, so it was a difficult moment. When my foot was ready and fine, obviously people have moved on."

London-born Campbell made his professional debut for Tottenham at the age of 18 and stayed there for 10 years before ending his White Hart Lane career in controversial circumstances, moving to north London rivals Arsenal.

His time with the Gunners was the most successful of his career as he won two Premier League titles - most notably as part of the 'Invincibles' side which went through the whole 2003-04 season without defeat - and two FA Cup medals.

Liverpool accounts reveal loss of nearly £50m

A massive £35 million was lost by the previous owners' plans for a new stadium, money which has been written off since the Fenway Sports Group's takeover

May 3, 2012 1:50:00 PM

By Oliver Platt

112623hp2.jpg

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has insisted that the Reds are now in "pretty good shape" financially despite the release of club accounts for the 2010-11 financial year revealing a £49.4 million loss.

The majority of that loss comes as a result of 'exceptional items', which cost the club £59m in total and included £8.4m spent on sacking Roy Hodgson.

Former owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett, spent £35m on design, legal and administrative costs to cover their new stadium project run by Dallas-based architects HKS, which has been written off since the takeover by Fenway Sports Group.

"I guess people will focus on the loss of £49.4m and there's no business - or people running any business - who are going to be pleased with any loss," Ayre told the Liverpool Echo.

"A big chunk of that £50m loss relates to the HKS project - which is now defunct - and associated costs around that.

"With new ownership, that was kind of milling around within the club's accounts and there was a very definite need to move that out.

"So rather than dwell on it, we've very smartly made the decision to remove it from the club's accounts. It's a positive step forward.

"If we had not written off these extraordinary costs, we would have been looking at breaking even."

Some of Liverpool's signings - and the fees paid to acquire them - have been questioned this season but Ayre thought that the Reds had laid down solid foundations for the future.

"I think it shows there's been a significant commitment from the club to new players," he claimed.

"We're going to a cup final this week knowing we have got a much bigger and better squad than perhaps we had 12 months ago.

"And as well as all those players coming in, there were a significant number of players going out. Certainly our fans are very aware of the amount of transfer activity that went on through the transfer window.

"I think it's reflective of good and proper investment in the team."

Champions League football, Ayre added, remained Liverpool's goal and would be needed in order for the Reds to keep pace with the world's top clubs.

"We absolutely want it," Ayre explained. "We need it in the long term because if we want to be one of the biggest - or the biggest football club in the world - you have to be playing Champions League football.

"But as we've said before not having it isn't the end of LFC or the end of the world. We will survive and we will move on and we will get back there."

Di Matteo happy to win ugly

Roberto Di Matteo admitted he was not bothered if the FA Cup and Champions League finals were boring 1-0s - as long as it was 1-0 to Chelsea.

Caretaker Blues boss Di Matteo has been rewarded spectacularly for playing to his squad's strengths since replacing the sacked Andre Villas-Boas two months ago. Unlike Villas-Boas, the Portuguese's former assistant has had no qualms about grinding out victories when necessary.

And while that may not chime with owner Roman Abramovich's desire to see `Barcelona in blue shirts`, it has proven mightily effective. Throw in the extra tension of a cup final and it could be the best route to glory for Chelsea in the coming days.

Di Matteo said ahead of the FA Cup final with Liverpool: "Because it's a big game, nobody wants to lose, and there isn't really any chance to get back if you lose. "It might be one like that, yeah. "Two good teams and every game we've played against each other has been quite balanced."

Asked if he would take a 1-0 win both on Saturday and in the Champions League final a fortnight later, he added: "I'd sign any day." Chelsea have not exactly been dull under Di Matteo, winning their FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham 5-1 and thrashing QPR 6-1.

They also beat Napoli 4-1 in the Champions League, while their semi-final win over Barcelona could hardly be described as boring. Di Matteo said: "I think we've scored a lot of goals, to be honest. "Scoring goals, creating chances, it means you are playing in the right direction.

"But there is also time when you have to defend as a team. It can't be one-way. "It's always better to win. If you can win with some attractive style, that's probably perfection. "Maybe you should do a survey with the fans to see what they think about it.

"Winning is important. If you can do it with the way you think is best to win the games, it can entertain as well. "People come to watch football to be entertained at times."

It may be dull on the pitch but it will certainly be lively off it. There has long been enmity between Chelsea and Liverpool fans, not helped by the disgraceful disruption of a minute's silence by the former supporters for the Hillsborough disaster during last month's semi-finals.

It goes back further than that to when Abramovich first bought the Blues, with Liverpool supporters accusing them of buying their success and having no real history. Di Matteo said: "There is a big rivalry between Chelsea and Liverpool, yes.

"Our fans probably feel similar, if not the same, towards Liverpool." He added: "Every time we play them, they play very well against us. "They seem to raise their game against us. Because I guess they're playing against us. I've seen them playing against other teams, but they do their best against us."

Premier League Weekend Team News

A round-up of team news ahead of this weekend's fixtures.

Arsenal vs Norwich

Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby will miss out with a calf problem. South Korea forward Park Ju-young will be the only addition to the squad from the 1-1 draw at Stoke.

Norwich left-back Adam Drury (groin) is a doubt. Zak Whitbread (hamstring) remains sidelined, while fellow defenders Marc Tierney (groin) and Daniel Ayala (knee) are ruled out of the season. Captain Grant Holt and striker Simeon Jackson are pressing for recalls to the starting XI.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham

Stephen Ireland could return to Alex McLeish's Aston Villa side after recovering from a hip injury and a more recent hamstring problem but striker Emile Heskey (Achilles) is still a doubt. Defender James Collins and midfielder Chris Herd will wait to see if they are included in the starting line-up following their involvement in an incident at a nightclub in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker is making a good recovery from his ankle injury and should be fit. Kyle Walker broke a toe during Wednesday's win over Bolton but will play against Villa after having a pain-killing injection but Ledley King could miss out again with his knee problem.

Bolton vs West Brom

Bolton midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker will undergo a fitness test on a leg injury. Reo-Coker had a similar assessment before Wednesday's 4-1 home defeat against Tottenham and had to come off in the second half of that game. Wanderers boss Owen Coyle has confirmed Gretar Steinsson has been out of action with a thigh injury rather than illness and the defender remains a doubt, while midfielder Darren Pratley is still sidelined with a virus.

New England coach Roy Hodgson has no fresh injury problems for his penultimate match as West Brom manager. Midfielder James Morrison has resumed training after recovering from his knee problem. Striker Shane Long picked up a knock during the goalless draw with Aston Villa last weekend but should be available.

Fulham vs Sunderland

Andrew Johnson is one of several players ruled out by Fulham. The striker missed recent trips to Everton and Liverpool with an adductor injury and will not recover in time to feature on Sunday. Johnson will be joined on the sidelines by midfielders Simon Davies (hip), Steve Sidwell (hernia) and Bryan Ruiz (foot), while defender Zdenek Grygera (knee) remains out.

Sunderland defender John O'Shea and striker Nicklas Bendtner are fighting to be fit after both men picked up foot injuries in training this week. Midfielder Craig Gardner is available after serving a one-match ban and defender Titus Bramble (Achilles) is back in training but short of fitness.

Man Utd vs Swansea

Jonny Evans and Danny Welbeck have both been ruled out of Manchester United's final home game due to foot injuries. Anders Lindegaard (ankle) is available for the first time since January as the Red Devils look to retain their severely-damaged title hopes.

Leon Britton (knee) is a doubt for Swansea but Angel Rangel is set to return from a hamstring injury at Old Trafford. The problem kept the Spaniard out of last weekend's 4-4 draw with Wolves, but with Alan Tate (calf) also available, manager Brendan Rodgers is set to return to his favoured 4-3-3 formation.

Newcastle vs Man City

Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote will be fit despite suffering a nasty head injury in midweek. The Ivory Coast international needed seven stitches to repair a gash above his eye after a collision with John Obi Mikel in Wednesday night's 2-0 win at Chelsea. Full-back Danny Simpson (ankle) remains a doubt.

City boss Roberto Mancini may be tempted to stick with the starting line-up from Monday's crucial win over Manchester United, although Micah Richards and James Milner might both hope to be involved.

QPR vs Stoke

QPR are able to welcome back Adel Taarabt after the Morocco international missed last week's 6-1 thrashing at west London rivals Chelsea through suspension. Samba Diakite is a doubt as he struggles with a virus, although manager Mark Hughes hopes he will be an option for the Loftus Road encounter.

Thomas Sorensen will replace Asmir Begovic as Stoke goalkeeper to ensure he is match sharp ahead of the European Championships next month. Winger Jermaine Pennant (hamstring) and defender Andy Wilkinson (groin) remain doubtful after missing Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Everton while midfielder Rory Delap (back) is also struggling.

Wolves vs Everton

Wolves interim boss Terry Connor is hopeful on-loan Tottenham defender Sebastien Bassong will be fit after missing last weekend's 4-4 draw at Swansea with a hamstring injury and will be given a late fitness test. Winger Matt Jarvis had a tight groin at the Liberty Stadium but is confident he will be available as Wolves search for their first win under Connor at the 12th attempt.

Everton left-back Leighton Baines has been ruled out despite progressing well in his recovery from a hamstring problem. Forward Victor Anichebe is also missing after suffering a groin injury in midweek and joins midfielder Jack Rodwell (hamstring) on the sidelines. Versatile captain Phil Neville and midfielder Darron Gibson could be doubtful after suffering slight knocks.

Blackburn vs Wigan

Wide man Martin Olsson could return to the Blackburn starting XI after being on the bench for the last three games due to a niggling groin complaint. Bradley Orr (Achilles) will be assessed ahead of kick-off David Goodwillie will be in the squad despite being given a community service order earlier this week for assaulting a man in Glasgow. Defender Grant Hanley (knee) remains sidelined.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has a full squad to choose from with striker Franco Di Santo free of a calf injury and defender Ronnie Stam (hamstring) also available.

Sir Alex Ferguson fears Manchester City will steal Manchester United's transfer targets

The Old Trafford boss has revealed his worry that the big-spending neighbours may outbid him for Luka Modric and Eden Hazard, who are on the top of his summer shopping list

May 6, 2012 9:21:00 AM

By Chris Butterworth JR

183055hp2.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is worried that big-spending neighboursManchester City will beat him to his two main summer targets as he looks to rejuvenate his squad.

Sir Alex has placed Tottenham’s Luka Modric and Lille’s Eden Hazard at the top of his shopping list, but is well aware the two players, who would cost a combined £65 million, are also being coveted by United's bitter rivals.

The Red Devils' boss has confirmed he will be looking to secure the signings of three players in the summer, as Darren Fletcher is still struggling will illness and veteran pair Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are fast approaching 40.

Manchester City have history when it comes to beating rival clubs to players, thanks to their financial muscle in the transfer market. Samir Nasri was close to moving to Old Trafford but was swayed by City’s offer of £175,000 a week. City also secured the signatures of James Milner and Gareth Barry from right under the noses of Chelsea and Liverpool, respectively.

Sir Alex told The Mail on Sunday: “‘No one can match City’s financial power, no one. The transfer market has been insane for a while and I think clubs like City create that. They can buy all the players, and put a marker on all the players, it makes it difficult then for clubs to be reasonable.

“There’s no doubt we’ll be bringing players in. Maybe two or three, it depends on the kind of market we’re dealing with. We have to accept the situation, so we do it a different way.

“We will try and look at younger players with the potential to develop at the club. That is what we are good at. Scholes and Giggs are coming to the end. Players like them don’t fall off trees.”

With Hazard being watched by so many of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Tottenham and Chelsea, the United boss may reportedly turn his attention to Argentine playmaker Nicolas Gaitan of Benfica.

Warnock Meets Diouf

1606418701cf6dde0b8159ee799a8dfaaa19f423.jpg

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock has refused to rule out making a move for El-Hadji Diouf despite having labelled the controversial striker a 'sewer rat' during his time managing QPR last season.

Diouf recently expressed his desire to join the Elland Road side on a free transfer and believes if given the chance he could establish an effective strike partnership with Luciano Becchio stating: 'Becchio is a good, intelligent player. I'm sure he and I could link up well at Leeds. It would be ideal for me.'

The move would come as a surprise to some considering the bad blood between Diouf and Leeds boss as a result of an incident during QPR's FA Cup clash with Blackburn last January in which Warnock accused the Senegal star of abusing Jamie Mackie while he lay on the pitch with a broken leg.

However when speaking to Sky Sports News Warnock would not be drawn on the reports linking Diouf with a move to Leeds stating: 'You can keep asking me all day but I've said all along we're not going to say anything about speculation.'

'I am hoping to sign my first player tomorrow so that will be the first time I admit to talking to anyone. I'm at Leeds United. It's a club I'm going to do the best I can to bring the right players into the club and you'll have to wait to see if he is one of those targets or not.'

Bosnia coach advises Dzeko to quit Manchester City

Having failed to score since February and being left out of the starting line-up for the last six games, the striker's national team coach urges him to move elsewhere

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has been advised by his international manager Safet Susicto leave the club.

Dzeko has not started a game for City since their 3-3 draw with Sunderland at the end of March and he hasn’t found the back of the net since February.

And the Bosnia national team coach Susic believes it is in the 26-year-old’s best interests that he departs the Etihad Stadium this summer in search of more regular first-team football.

"Dzeko's situation at Manchester City cannot last forever,” Susic told the Daily Mirror. “He knows what is best for him.

"It seems that Manchester City will win the title, which means Roberto Mancini and his staff will remain, and I saw that City are planning to bring in even more attacking players."

The Bosnian striker has not been short of potential suitors in the wake of him slipping down the pecking order at City.

Newly-crowned Italian champions Juventus are said to be interested in securing the 26-year-old’s signature this summer, though the striker’s agent, Silvano Martina, does not believe the Old Lady can afford him.

"Dzeko is a champion, although this season he has not done so well," Martina told reporters.

"The City striker costs too much, so no Italian club will deal with the English club to buy him now."

Extra Time: Rooney's horse Pippy has a debut to forget

The two-year-old colt failed to emulate the Manchester United striker, who scored a hat-trick in his first run out for the club, by finishing last in a meet at Chester

May 9, 2012 11:00:00 PM

By David Lynch

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney failed to pass on his magic touch to horse Pippy on Wednesday afternoon, as the colt made a disappointing race debut.

The three-year-old, one of a trio of horses owned by the Englishman, failed to place during a meet at a wet Chester Racecourse.

Rooney famously scored a Champions League hat-trick in his first run out for the Red Devils, though it seems his ability has not yet rubbed off onto his horses.

His team-mate, horse enthusiast and, if we're being cruel, former footballer Michael Owen was also present to help cheer Pippy on to no avail.

And Rooney later revealed to The Telegraph the bizarre story behind the horses' name, saying: "The name was just what my wife got called when she was younger." Fascinating stuff.

Shearer blames Venky's for Rovers woes

Former Blackburn hero Alan Shearer has expressed sympathy for manager Steve Kean while blaming owners Venky's for the club's malaise.

Shearer feels Kean has been left too open to criticism during a season in which Rovers slumped towards a relegation that was confirmed by defeat to Wigan on Monday.

Kean has been subjected to vitriolic fans' abuse throughout the campaign but Shearer believes he has maintained his dignity as the club's public face while Indian firm Venky's have become more distant.

Shearer told talkSPORT: "I have to say, I feel sympathy for Steve Kean because he was thrown into the lions' den really - you get on with it, you are the face, you are speaking about everything, whatever is right or wrong.

"There is only the owners you can blame really - they are the only guys you can look at.

"What disappoints me is that nobody really hears from them.

"We heard from them when they first went in - they were going to sign Ronaldinho and (David) Beckham and whoever.

"But no disrespect to the players they have brought in, but they are not Ronaldinho or Beckham.

"The manager has had to take all of the flak. He goes out there [India] once a month from what I can gather to give a briefing or be briefed on whatever has happened or is happening, and the club is in a mess now."

Shearer was the star of Blackburn's Premier League title success in 1995 after joining the club for a then British record £3.6million from Southampton.

The striker, who moved on to Newcastle in 1996, is sorry to see the Ewood Park club in such a state, facing the prospect of Championship football and continued supporter unrest.

When asked how he felt, he said: "A bit of sadness, a bit of anger - a bit of everything to be honest. It is an excellent football club.

"I had four great years there and they never ever professed to be one of the biggest clubs.

"It is still what the community loves - they still go there and they are never going to have huge crowds like the big clubs do.

"But what Blackburn did when I was there was come in, take on the big boys and beat them. It was an incredible achievement.

"I know they were relegated four or five years after we'd won the league, but they came up again two years after that.

"For me they are a Premier League outfit - they deserve to be in the Premier League."
