Tony Tan - disingenuous or dishonest or both

By now many of you must have read the speech by ex cabinet Minister and Presidential certainty gave at SMU. For a man of such stature, the nephew of highly respected the late Tan Chin Tuan it is a bloody disgrace.

Singapore long before Tony Tan was born had always welcomed foreigners. It became cosmopolitan weeks after Raffles set foot on it. It has never ever turned away foreigners and the notion of xenophobia never crossed anyone's mind.

Singaporeans are merely asking for a fighting chance to remain as contributing citizens and are not seeking handouts.

Everyone knows that quotas for foreigners have been in our education system since the late 70s. Foreigners with lower grades have been admitted to our tertiary institutions while Singaporeans with better grades are not admitted. This is a fact. I challenge any cabinet minister to deny this.

It is also a fact that foreigners for whom we paid taxpayers money for education have left the country. The Govt needs to reveal numbers on the outflow. These have not been revealed. We know more Jack Neo and his sordid sex life than we know about important things in our country.

Vote Tony Tan out. Make it clear that this man is dishonest, had 18 years of hold on the country's education and did no Singaporean any favours.

the question now is how do we go about against the MSM who are hellbent on getting TT into the president's office? not to mention the very high possibility that all the other candidates will be disqualified.

I am aware that they could but it will be very foolish of them to disqualify all other candidates.

There is no doubt that there will be a contest. The issue is how to ensure that the Anti-TT votes are not diluted if its more than a 2-way contest.

The other bigger issue, assuming TJS is disqualified and TKL plays kingmaker and pulls out of the contest, is for TCB's profile to be raised sufficiently high in the general populace to counter the day-in day-out outright campaigning being done on TT's behalf by the MSM and the government.

Prior to the advent of new media, there would be not much hope for TCB. In today's context, there is hope through new media, but that will depend on how the reach from the new media is extended to the mainstream population. If the campaign news only circulate within the Internet, then the chances are not so good.

We will need to reach out! Otherwise TT and the MSM will simply white-wash everything and make him smell like a rose....

They did that with Prataman, who walked into the job and for 12 bloody fucking years performed immeasurably nothing.

Singapore primary, secondary and tertiary education systems had simple, sensible, fair and effective streaming and quota under TT. Those days under TT at MOE, whomever heard of scrambling like in a rat race for primary and secondary school places, universities overfilled with foreigners? It was LYS and TCH in the million-dollar-minister era who screwed up the system as ministerial performance became heavily weighted by revenues, not by what good has they done for we the citizens. They didn't even need to be popular so they were politically invincible with GRC system.

SRN couldn't withstand an election unless his opponent is another minority. Even AK could be sure of beating him had he been allowed to stand.

Dr Tan Cheng Bock needs to substantially up his game.
His campaign so far has been very slow moving.

Chua Kim Yeow did not campaign at all during PE '93 and he managed to garner 42% of the votes. Mind you, at that time still no new media. Many people therefore expect the non PAP-endorsed candidate to perform even better this tme round...

Whilst its true the Chua did not campaign, it must also be said that the PAP deliberately reduced the amount of marketing of late President OTC to lower the winning percentage. There were PAP grassroots leaders that were told to vote Chua so that the popular vote percentage was lowered....

Unfortunately, this time time, the full force of the MSM is behind the candidate. Sadly, having spoken about the EP with a large number of people, many are not interested in the issues and are only voting based on perception and stature. In this respect, TT with MSM's help, comes out way ahead.

Good observation. LKY would have been in deep shit had OTC scored 70% thereabouts nationwide.

Here's my take:

The online populace of Singapore falls mainly between 18 - 35. This makes up ard 25% of the population of Singapore. I would hazard that most online netizens fall in the 40% that voted opposition.

These 25% of online netizens will mostly be torn between TKL, TJS or TCB.

TT is banking on the 60% to pull him through and this is where the fight needs to be. On the ground, inch by inch supported by social media. In 5 - 10 years, a campaign could be fought entirely online but not now.

This is where having the MSM on your side is godsent. These 60% are largely older folks who believe in a 'track record'. Their beliefs will be reinforced by

1) Their top of mind recollection and good branding of Tony Tan
2) Continuous coverage by MSM

As I said in another thread, this campaign is gonna come down to one factor:

He who's face appears more, wins.

Do you think he is slow moving compared to TKL or TJS? He's been walking the ground every weekend meeting people. His blog is full of information and regularly updates his FB.
What else do you think TCB (and TKL whom you support right? or TJS for that matter) need to do to up their game to stand a fighting chance against TT?

Walking the ground is joke in a nationwide presidential election. What's up? Covering 87 consitituencies in two months or less? Let me give you and them a tip. Get enough polling and counting agents for a start. The votes aren't going to be polled and counted in tens of thousands - it's going to be in the millions.

That is putting the cart before the horse. Wait for nomination day before then get the ball rolling.
