Disabled looking for relief from heat turned away by mall security guards

Athletes and participants involved in the Singapore Paralympics roadshow on Sunday, Aug 3, were turned away by security guards at Ngee Ann City when they tried to seek relief from the heat, says a STOMPer, who was at the event.

And she wonders why they were acting as if they had 'no heart'.

The STOMPer had written in to a minister to alert him about the incident.

Says Sally:

"I was present at the Roadshow on 2nd Aug outside Ngee Ann City,Civic Plaza. My son's school Grace Orchard was invited to perform there as part of the concert. The Roadshow was held outdoor and it was a very hot Saturday afternoon which you will definitely remember if you were present.

"There were three segments in our performance with about 45 mins interval each.

"With the scorching weather, the children went inside the lobby at the Ngee Ann City, Civic Plaza to cool down during the interval.

"Our group found a corner and rested there while waiting for our turn. We were however approached by the security guards not to congregate there as we might obstruct human traffic. We were told to go somewhere else - to stay outside the building, which we did.

"Over the other side of lobby, we also saw groups of Paralympic athletes in wheelchair seeking some 'cooling down' time inside the building too.

"They were shortly being dispersed by the security guards. The attached picture shows two security guards looking on at the athletes when they decided to stay put.( there were another 2 hidden). These 2 security guards stood right next those Paralympic athletes deliberately making them feel uncomfortable.

"We were there as part of the participants of the Paralympic Launch but we can't help but feel treated less than satisfactorily by the management of the Ngee Ann City.

"First of all, we were not in any way obstructing anybody or shops when we rested in front of a shop which is under renovation.

"Our kids were also very well behaved too.

"I am very disappointed with the way the management handle the situation.

"Is it implying that using the lobby area to cool down is not permitted for the performers/participants as they are not-potential buyers at least for the day?

'And if this is part of their policy, I regret to say Ngee Ann City is not an ideal place to hold any Roadshows.

"We do not feel welcome.

"The Singapore's Pride for Paralympic Games is definitely not felt in Ngee Ann City..."

STOMP is contacting Ngee Ann City for a response. Watch this space for updates.
