KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — Singapore Air Force (SAF) aircraft illegally entered Malaysian airspace 2,508 times since 2008, the Defence Ministry said today.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysia’s “diplomatic” objections against SAF’s trespassing started when the International Court of Justice ruled that Batu Puteh, Batuan Tengah and Tubir Selatan belonged to Singapore in March 23, 2008.
In a written reply to Khairy Jamaluddin (Rembau-Umno), Zahid provided a breakdown of the 2,508 airspace violations:
* In 2008, 985 Singaporean military aircraft were detected in Malaysian airspace with an average of 164 incidents a month. In 2009, 1,286 Singaporean military aircraft were detected, amounting to 107 incidents a month. Last year, 218 aircraft were detected with 18 incidents a month.
* From January to May 2011, 19 aircraft were detected in Malaysian airspace with an average of four incidents a month.
“There have been many trespasses, even though it has decreased in numbers this year. This been going on beyod our knowledge. We do not know the reasons for the trespass.
“Singapore is careful and protective of its airspace, but it appears we are not,” Khairy told reporters today.
