(LEAD) Marine Corps guards mistakenly shoot at civilian plane

SEOUL, June 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's Marine Corps guards shot at a civilian airplane flying near the tense Yellow Sea border with North Korea, misidentifying it as one of the communist country's military planes, a military source said Saturday. No damage occurred, the source said.

Two soldiers guarding the southern coast of Gyodong Island in Incheon, 80 kilometers west of Seoul, fired their K-2 rifles at the Asiana Airlines flight for about 10 minutes at dawn on Friday, the source said.

They are thought to have fired a total of 99 rounds toward the South Korean plane.

At the time, the plane was making its descent into Incheon International Airport, carrying about 119 flight crew and passengers from China, according to other sources.

The airliner was undamaged as it was about 500 to 600 meters out of the range of the K-2 rifles, the military source said.

"When the plane, which the guards said they had never seen before, was approaching, the guards misidentified it as a plane from the North Korean air force and shot at it," the source said.

The soldiers claimed the airplane was flying north of the normal route, but Asiana Airlines said the plane never went off course.

"We checked yesterday through the air force and the airport control center to make sure there were no abnormalities such as being off course," a company official said.

The incident came amid lingering tensions over Pyongyang's two deadly attacks on the South last year that killed 50 South Koreans.

The North recently threatened to break off ties with South Korea and to retaliate against Seoul for anti-Pyongyang psychological warfare.

The Marine Corps said it will intensify educating its guards on how to identify civilian flights to prevent any recurrence while asking civilian flights not to deviate from set courses.

The South Korean jet was coming in to land at Seoul's Incheon International Airport - close to the border with North Korea - when Marines opened fire with rifles.

The incident took place at dawn Friday, Yonhap news agency reported, citing a military source.

The Asiana Airlines jet carrying about 119 people was undamaged and no one was hurt.

The incident highlights how persistent tensions near the heavily armed inter-Korean border pose the possibility for dangerous miscalculation.

The Korean peninsula has remained in a technical state of conflict since the Korean War ended in a truce in 1953. A peace treaty has never been signed.

South Korea's defence officials and civil aviation officials could not immediately be reached for comment on the report.

An Asiana official reached by telephone confirmed that marines fired small weapons at one of the airline's planes coming from China and that there was no damage.

Two marine guards stationed on Gyodong island near the border fired rifle rounds at the flight as it approached Incheon International Airport west of Seoul, mistaking it for a North Korean military plane, the Yonhap report said. The jet was flying out of range of the rifles and avoided damage, it said.

The airport is located about 25 miles south of the inter-Korean border.

Yonhap quoted its source as saying the marines claimed the plane was flying off course. The Asiana official, described the plane's route as normal.

News of the incident comes as South Korea on Friday refused to send back a group of North Koreans who crossed into southern waters by boat last weekend, saying all nine have expressed the desire to defect.

North Korea has demanded the immediate repatriation of all nine people who landed on a South Korean-held island last Saturday aboard two small boats. Pyongyang warned on Thursday that failure to send them back would aggravate ties between the two Koreas.

North Korea threatened earlier this month to retaliate for the South Korean military's use of photos of leader Kim Jong Il's family for shooting practice.

Seoul also blames Pyongyang for two deadly attacks that killed 50 South Koreans last year. US-made missiles capable of striking Pyongyang were deployed to South Korean sites near the Demilitarized Zone earlier this year, South Korean media reports said. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff declined to confirm the reports.

South Korean troops mistakenly open fire at Asiana passenger plane

18 June 2011 38 views No Comment BY: BNO News

SEOUL (BNO NEWS) -- South Korean troops mistakenly opened fire at an Asiana Airlines passenger plane on early Friday morning after misidentifying it as a North Korean military plane, the Yonhap news agency reported on Saturday.

The incident happened on the southern coast of Gyodong Island in Incheon, 80 kilometers (49 miles) west of Seoul, when two South Korean soldiers guarding the area spotted a large aircraft which they believed to be a North Korean military plane.

But the aircraft was in fact an Asiana Airlines passenger plane which was making its descent into Incheon International Airport, carrying 119 passengers and crew. The aircraft was flying from an airport in China.

"When the plane, which the guards said they had never seen before, was approaching, the guards misidentified it as a plane from the North Korean air force and shot at it," a source told Yonhap.

According to the soldiers, who fired their K-2 rifles, the airplane appeared to be flying north of the normal route for passenger planes. Asiana denied those claims, saying there were no abnormalities.

Despite shots being fired at the passenger plane for about 10 minutes, no damage was reported as the plane was about 500 meters (0.3 mile) out of range of the K-2 rifles. The aircraft landed safely.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula, which is officially still at war, have been at critical since a North Korean torpedo fired from a midget submarine sank the ROKS Cheonan, a South Korean Navy ship carrying 104 people. The attack in March 2010 left 46 people killed.

And months later, North Korean forces bombarded the disputed Yeonpyeong Island, prompting South Korea to return fire at North Korea. The artillery engagement from the North left two South Korean civilians killed, while the South's return fire killed at least five people in North Korea.

They are capable of this then you can expect them to launch a big anti-aircraft missile the next time. And the result wouldn't be the same.:oIo:

To be fair, the South Korean military are mostly young conscripts so they are not natural soldiers. In the tense situation esp in the aftermath of the North 's surprise attack on Yeongbeong, it is not surprising these conscripted Skorean soldiers are nervous and so even fired on a airline using their own rifles..a failed technical loop in the first place.

The South Korean Govt knew they cannot thwarted an attacck from the North and so have to depend on the US for help. While it may be an embarassment, in times of war with the North, the whole Skorean military will be put under the command of the US military. This is necessary to counter the North threat.

The North Korean military may not have the sophiscated weaponry of the SKoreans in terms of conventional capability therefore it is applying a concept of using overwhelming missiles attacks in times of war. It has develope a whole range of advanced missiles capable of hitting targets of both the US and Skorean military. To prevent a Iraqi or Libya style attack by the US, they have furnish a system of nuclear deterrence. The US have already admitted indirectly that the North already have nuclear weapons and thus would not want to risk a war that may harm the lives of its personnel in any eventualities.

Kim Jong-Ill is not a madman. He is a brilliant military strategist who are cautious , knowledgeable and capable. He is unlike Saddam or Gadaffi who gives up nuclear weapons easily in return for western carrots which led to their demise and destruction of their countries. Kim may be a Marxist but his thoughts are basically Confucianist and Orientalist.

However, the ultimate goal is for a peace in the Korean peninsula. The North cannot unify the South in its own terms and the south could never win a war against the North even with massive US help. North Korea is not the typical Arab nation that can be easily intimidated. A war with the North means a massive bloodshed of US lives which the US will never stomach. The US are also afraid of a direct confrontation with China and even Russia.

The only way the US can do is to create disunity and chaos and anti-Kim revolts inside the North. The South Korean also try to use Christianity to influence the North's people. But with a close society and a people not prone to Arab style uprising, this tactic is at best only on paper.
