Leader of East Coast GRC team call it quits and felt betrayed because WP decides to put Gerald Giam as NCMP,,,,,,,

this 9 member NCMP thing really works against the opposition.

although most if not all oppo hate and disagree with the system, they will still have to adapt to it to make the full use of the facility made available to them,,,,,

this unhappiness of ERic Tan he is so much like GMS, maybe he should join GMS and Nicole Seah to whack a GRC next 2016

I do not know much about politics but I do know a little about leading people. Hence my two cents and assumptions.

The WP puts Eric Tan in charge of the East Coast GRC because of his leadership abilities which are better than all the rest of the team. He is able to spearhead their drive into East Coast and hence the WP's confidence in him.

The WP puts Gerald Giam as an NCMP because of his ability to verbalize his thoughts and present his arguments. What the WP is doing is to increase their chances of winning the East Coast GRC in the next Election. By putting him as NCMP, the people of East Coast will see his abilities and by extension, believe in the entire East Coast team.

If I am right, then the WP will still retain Eric Tan as the leader of the East Coast GRC with Gerald Giam as the supporting member in the next Election. Both parties' strengths are utilized for the benefit of the party. The result is a win for the East Coast team.

Maybe there can be some dialogue within the WP?

I am sure the other members of East Coast GRC are dejected that they were not selected. I doubt that Gerald Giam is head and shoulders above the rest that all willingly acknowledge him as the rightful representative.

They are however a team. And a team sticks together and make it work. For a time, one gets all the glory. But in time, all gets into Parliament.

Together.

He told media that he will be choosen for the NCMP but now it is Giam. He scared people say he like this mah...

If that is the concern, it is easily solved. Just announced that his East Coast team agreed to have Giam as the representative, in his capacity as LEADER. Before that, fight like hell with the WP CEC in private.

A pride of lions that went hungry for days was hunting for prey but yielded no success. Instead they chanced upon a small piece of leftover. It was this crucial moment where the real character of the old leader surfaced, and has decided to have the meat all for itself without long-sighted consideration for the pride's future survival. It has forgotten that staying within and making best decision for the pride will ensure long term success as well as survival for each and every member lion inside it. It was old, and there were younger and fitter ones. If it had given the meat to feed the younger one, the young lion would be able to stand up stronger after finishing the meal and have better chance to take down a bigger and fresher prey for the whole pride the next round. The old leader may have the leadership quality and experience but lacks the vision and wisdom to see far, and unfortunately, that momentary blindness is all it takes to bring itself down. If the old leader is able to control the selfish monster within and re-gain its long-sighted vision in time, it will be good. If not, leaving the pride is inevitable.

Eric Tan is a very good speaker, much better than Gerald Giam.

Put it this way, Eric Tan poses a great threat to LTK's leadership if given the same amount of exposure as Sylvia when she was NCMP. This is a good opportunity for LTK to cut Eric Tan down to size.

Renewal is just a word to get rid of opposing or threatening factions within the party..

George Yeo was a victim as well.

Gerald Giam choice than uncle Eric Tan. Because is has greater potential to lead another team next election and also he is young and hungry. He will attract a lot of young voters who crave for youth voice. Eric Tan should accept the CEC's position and move on. It shows that the party is keen on renewal.

I agree that Gerald has greater potential for all the reasons given in your post. This is why Eric has decided to quit. It's not so much about giving face or losing face; the decision to put Gerald ahead of Eric in the pecking order can be construed as a call from LTK for Eric's retirement.

There are protocol & consensus to observe. No one should act alone in a political arena. If a person see himself more important than his party interest, he is not indispensible. Otherwise he will create future chaos by not willing to unite with his own party.

based on an honor system, the leader of the grc team is deserving of the appointment. to rob him of his just dessert after years of handwork and patience is tantamount to betrayal. and adding salt to injury in his twilight years is like telling him... "go to a corner and masturbate until you are 60. by then you're too old and we don't need you anymore."

it's only one fucking useless ncmp seat. let the old man cap his work with one last hurrah. at least he gets into parliament before he starts seeing the heart doctor, if that was his last coveted wish. what's the fucking deal with that?

A political party will always want to broaden it's ability to represent constituents across different age groups and backgrounds. As a 55 years old chinese, the group that Eric Tan can effectively represent in Parliament is overlapped extensively with LTK (54), Chen Show Mao (50), Sylvia Lim (46) and Yee Jenn Jong (46), and two of them already have parliamentary experience. On the other hand, representatives for the 20-plus to 30-plus constituent group are Abdul Manap (35), Pritam Singh (34) and Yaw Shin Leong (34), and all 3 of them are newbie MPs. So, letting Gerald Giam (34) instead of Eric Tan to go into Parliament as ncmp will actually maximise the range of constituents that WP can represent in the next 5 years. This is a difficult but strategic choice to help improve the odds of winning for WP in the next general election.

it's a mistake. many uncles and aunties in sg live past 60, and they still comprise a big part of the electorate in 5 years. gambling on youth and putting too much emphasis on age as part of a party renewable strategy can be risky with the most annoying, stubborn and misunderstood voting block... old $500 a month foggies who don't play play on the internet or die but wield tremendous voting and sticking power.
