MM Lee Kuan Yew

SINGAPORE: NTUC continues its year-long 50th anniversary celebration with a special dinner on Friday night.

Among the individuals to be honoured is Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who played a key role in the union's history.

An interview with Mr Lee - entitled "From dark days to trade unionism" - appears in a special commemorative book published by NTUC.

His account of NTUC's history goes way back to before Singapore's all-encompassing union was formed.

It is a story which starts in the turbulent 1960s, when pro-communists in the unions had a powerful grip on the Chinese-speaking unions.

In the interview, Mr Lee reminisced on the union fights, the case for re-structuring the unions, and touches upon present issues facing the group. He pointed out the issue of leadership succession as the biggest problem for NTUC right now.

But in the meantime, there is no doubt that NTUC is still going strong and ready to celebrate its legacy and its heroes.

Old fuck have lost his relevance to the citizens of Singapore.
He is hanging on for what reasons only he knows.
Father and son in the cabinet and yet they lost a GRC and a heavy weight minister.

Did he forget to mention:

1. that he used Devan Nair as Sec Gen to handle a rebellious NTUC but labelled him an alcoholic President and dumped him when he was proving too rebellious himself?
2. that he also used Ong Teng Cheong in the unions after Lim Chee Onn failed and then treated him like a pariah when as President, he bit his master's hand to ask for more transparency and accountability?
3. what happened to Phey Yew Kok, ex SecGen, who absconded with workers' money? Case closed? Let's move on?
