'Blank cheque' for Mass Communication student
MERISSA Jane Lee, a 19 year-old Mass Communication student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) has been awarded the Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal, $10,000 cash, and a 'blank cheque' in the form of a bond-free scholarship to pay for university tuition fees at any university of her choice.
The Straits Times reported that Lee will be pursuing a film-and-television degree in the United States (US), which costs $150,000 and would be a strain on her parents' finances.
The bond-free scholarship that comes with the Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal is given out to NP's top student every year. The Straits Times reported that top students from the various NP schools will be interviewed by a panel of judges, consisting of the polytechnic's senior management, who will then decide on who to award the medal to.
This year, Lee, who has a Grade Point Average of 3.83 and scored mostly As and Bs for her modules, was chosen for the medal.
She reveals that she had been working towards the medal since she began her education at NP, and told The Straits Times that she was "filled with a sense of relief" when she found out that she had won the scholarship and medal two weeks ago after putting in her best efforts in her school work for the past three years.
She also describes the opportunity to pursue her degre in film and television in the US as a "dream come true", and said that without the scholarship, that dream would have been dashed.
