PAP Chairman Lim Boon Heng has finally let the cat out of the bag – that the NCMP system is a “wayang” all along put up by the undemocratic PAP regime to give Singaporeans an ‘opposition’ voice in parliament while maintaining its clear-cut majority at the same time.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an NTUC forum, Mr Lim reiterated that the NCMP system was never set up to change government policy.

“The NCMP is not set up to change government policy, the NCMP is set up to highlight whatever weaknesses there may be in government policies and if the NCMP can do that in parliament, I think his or her standing will be quite different come the next election.”

He added that the NCMP have ‘every right to speak on every subject in parliament’ and have there is ‘no obstruction’ to them expressing strong views that is different from the PAP. However, at the end of the day, the NCMPs are still powerless to change the PAP policies.

What’s the point of having ‘opposing voices’ in parliament when they do not have the power at all to hold the PAP accountable to its words and actions?

Unless Singaporeans deny the PAP its traditional two-thirds majority in parliament, no number of NCMPs in parliament will be able effect any changes in the current PAP policies.
