7 years' jail for stealing generators worth $240,000
Man filched items while pretending to transport material from worksites
By Khushwant Singh

A MAN hired a lorry with a crane on the pretext of transporting heavy machinery from a worksite.

But Nanthakumaran Lokanathan was not a worker at the site; he was on a stealing spree.

By the time the 34-year-old Singaporean was found out, he had stolen more than $240,000 worth of generators.

He was sentenced to seven years of corrective training yesterday.

The general worker was caught on July 11 last year after driving off with metal sheets worth $12,000 from a construction site in Jurong East, the district court heard.

Two workers at the site had stopped the lorry but Nanthakumaran made up a story that he was moving the metal sheets to another building site in Tampines on the instructions of a 'Mr Choo'. The two workers played it safe by taking pictures of the lorry before allowing it to leave.

When the theft was discovered hours later, police had no problem finding the lorry in Old Tampines Road.

Investigations revealed that Nanthakumaran stole 18 generators between October 2009 and July last year.

His busiest period was between April 2 and July 1, when he filched 15 generators from worksites in Yio Chu Kang, Jurong, Ang Mo Kio, Tampines and Mandai.

On several occasions, he would steal two generators, each from a different worksite, on the same day.

The court documents indicate that the offences were committed on public holidays or either very early in the morning or late in the evening of workdays.

He admitted selling the generators to second-hand goods dealer Chua Wei Keong, who would then export these to Vietnam. The 41-year-old accomplice has been charged but the case has not come to trial.

Nanthakumaran had pleaded guilty last month to eight theft charges. Another 11 similar charges were taken into consideration by District Court Sarjit Singh when passing sentence.

In a letter passed to the court through defence counsel K.R. Manicka, Nanthakumaran said he was very remorseful and asked for a short jail term as he wanted to join his pregnant Thai wife in Thailand. 'I want to see my son before he grows big,' he wrote in English.

The court had heard that Nanthakumaran has been in trouble with the law four times since 1997 for theft and disposing of stolen property.

Corrective training involves being jailed from five to 14 years, with no remission for good behaviour. It is meant for recalcitrant offenders.

On each theft charge, Nanthakumaran could have been jailed up to three years and fined $10,000.
