A MAN who had sex with two underage girls a few years ago was sentenced to 15 months' jail on Tuesday.

But Aaron Kok Chun Cheong, 23, will only start his sentence on Tuesday, Jan 4, 2011, as he wanted to spend the New Year with his family.

Kok, now a trainee at National Institute of Education (NIE), was in national service at the time of the offences in 2007 and 2008.

The court heard that he got to know the two girls through an Internet chatline in 2006.

He had sex with a 15-year-old student at a toilet for the handicapped in West Mall shopping centre on April 20, 2008, a day after his return from NS training in Taiwan.

Earlier in September 2007, he had invited the other girl, then 12, to his flat where he had sex with her in his bedroom.

The offences came to light when the younger girl was found to be pregnant and was warded in hospital in July 2008.

The girl, who terminated the pregnancy, had told the police that she had engaged in sex with several male persons.

Kok was not the biological father of the foetus.

Three other charges were taken into consideration during his sentencing.

Defence counsel Amolat Singh said Kok - who had a good record in polytechnic and during his national service - would have to pay liquidated damages amounting to $50,000 to $60,000 to the NIE for breaching his training contract.

SINGAPORE: Another member of the teaching profession has been convicted of sexual offences.

Aaron Kok Chun Cheong, 23, who on Tuesday pleaded guilty to two counts of sex with two underage girls, will be sacked as a trainee teacher, his lawyer, Amolat Singh, told a District Court.

Kok committed the offences between September 2007 and April 2008 when he was a full-time national serviceman.

Kok met the first girl through an Internet chat-line in late 2006.

A year later, he invited the girl, 13, to his flat and the pair then became intimate with each other. They then had sex and did not contact each other after that.

The girl was then warded at National University Hospital on July 15, 2008 after she complained of stomach pain and vomiting. She was pregnant.

She told the police she had had sex with several men.

She had an abortion on July 31, 2008, and tests revealed that Kok was not the biological father of the foetus.

A month earlier, another girl, 15, reported to the police that she had consensual sex with Kok on three occasions between April 20 and May 31 2008.

The first offence was committed in a handicapped persons toilet at West Mall shopping centre.

Pleading for leniency, Kok said he was a first-time offender and did not set out to target his victims.

Mr Amolat said: "They initiated and actively sought to have sexual relations with him."

Kok was jailed 15 months for carnal connection. He could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined.

Mr Amolat added that for breaching his contract with the National Institute of Education, Kok would also need to pay about S$60,000 as liquidated damages.

Last week, former MOE scholar, Jonathan Wong, was expelled from the University of York in the United Kingdom after pleading guilty to 17 charges of possessing child pornography videos.

The York Crown Court sentenced Wong to a six-month imprisonment sentence suspended for two years - which means he will not be jailed if he does not break the law during that period.

The court also ordered Wong to be placed under eight months' supervision and to be listed on the sex offender registry for seven years. He is disqualified from working with children.

The girls are not so innocent: Readers React

By Lee Jia Xin

The two girls who were involved in the case where an NIE trainee had sex with them a few years ago, are not as innocent as they seem.

THE two girls who were aged 12 and 15 when they were involved in the case where a National Institute of Education (NIE) trainee had sex with them a few years ago, are not as innocent as they seem.

This is the overall view of straitstimes.com readers when they reacted to the media reports on Wednesday.

Aaron Kok Chun Cheong, 23, a second-year trainee at NIE, was sentenced to 15 months' jail on Tuesday.

He committed the offences in 2007 and 2008 while serving national service.

Many argued that the girls were complicit in the act, especially the then-12-year-old girl who had multiple sexual partners.

'The (then) 12-year-old girl is not innocent because she had a few partners and even became pregnant (with one of them, and not Kok himself),' said Gladys Dee.

Echoing her sentiments was HS Ng who felt that the girls were not gullible but fully aware of their actions, and added that sex among teenagers is so 'rampant' these days.

But others are concerned about how teachers seem to be in the news lately as evidenced from the ex-MOE scholar Jonathan Wong, who was arrested in the United Kingdom for possessing child pornography.

Another reader Jacq Oh worried that 'paedophiles are infiltrating the teaching population as a means to reach out to their prey'.

Reader Siti Nor'aini Abdul Samat joined in the call for NIE to be more stringent in their candidate selections.

A Ministry of Education spokesman said it would initiate disciplinary proceedings against Kok, with a view to terminating him from service.

She said the ministry adopted a stringent recruitment process to ensure that suitable applicants with a passion to teach are selected, apart from academic qualifications.

Former MOE scholar charged with underage sex

SINGAPORE: A former teaching scholar who was found with child pornography while studying in the UK has been charged with underage sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Jonathan Wong, 25, faces 10 charges in total, including seven counts of having sex with a minor, and three charges of committing indecent acts.

Wong had been caught for possessing child pornography while he was an undergraduate at the University of York in Dec 2010. Police had found 50 videos in his computer's hard drive, with half depicting hardcore scenes. Some of the graphic videos featured girls as young as six.

But the former Hwa Chong student was given a six-month sentence suspended for two years, which means he would not have to face jail time if he does not re-offend within two years.

According to the report in Lianhe Wanbao, Wong returned to Singapore in January last year, where he found a job as a sub-editor at a publishing firm.

The offences allegedly occurred from February to June. The Shin Min Daily News reported that Wong, who had a girlfriend then, got to know the teen in church.

The pair communicated online regularly and were close; she addressed him as "daddy" and he called her his "daughter".

Wong discussed topics on sex - including masturbation and oral sex, using 'sex education' as an excuse. He then had sex with the girl at his home and in a public toilet, and also took nude photos of her.

The case only came to light when a teacher contacted the girl's father, who is overseas, to inform him that she had been performing poorly at school. The family resides in Melbourne, Australia, where her father is based.

The girl eventually told her father about her relationship with Wong, and he flew back to Singapore to make a police report.

Wanbao understands that the teen, now 16, has moved to Melbourne to be with her family.

Ex-MOE scholar jailed for sexual offences with minor

By Alvina Soh | Posted: 09 July 2012 1511 hrs

Former_MOE_scholar_charged_for_underage_sex-topImage.jpg

SINGAPORE: Former Ministry of Education scholar Jonathan Wong Wai Kheong was sentenced to five years' jail on Monday.

Twenty-five-year-old Wong was previously charged in Singapore with 10 counts of sexual offences with an underage girl.

He was found guilty on five counts, including two counts of committing indecent acts and three counts of having sex with a minor.

Wong, who was caught for possessing child pornography in Britain, was expelled by the University of York and had his scholarship revoked in 2010.

He is now an editorial assistant with a publishing company here.

Wong and the girl, who was then 15 years old, became close after chatting online over Facebook and Skype.

Wong addressed the girl as "daughter" and the girl in turn called him "daddy".

They later met up and had sex on several occasions between February and June last year.

These included oral sex at a toilet at Esplanade Drive.

They also had sex at staircase landings of blocks in Bukit Batok Central and Woodlands Drive.

Wong also lured the girl into sex under the pretence of sexual education.

On one occasion, he told the girl to strip and masturbate in an online video chat.

He then took nude pictures of her, unknown to her.

The court heard that Wong, who has been diagnosed a paedophile, had a 22-year-old girlfriend at the time of the offences.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Kavita Uthrapathy described Wong as a "smooth-operator" who "sexually-groomed" the girl.

She also brought up Wong's past offences, which included molesting a schoolgirl and peeping into a female toilet, when he was in secondary school.

Wong, who appeared in court in shackles, told the court that he was "deeply remorseful."

In a six-page handwritten mitigation plea, Wong admitted that his condition would trigger when faced with pornography or when he came into close "emotional and physical contact with an underage girl".

In his statement, Wong added that he had taken precautionary steps, including seeking psychological treatment and a self-imposed curfew.

He also said that he had deleted every contact he had of any girl below 18 years of age, from his phone and Facebook.

District Judge Jasbendar Kaur, in her sentencing, condemned Wong for "taking advantage of a vulnerable girl" in order "to satisfy his own base sexual needs."

She said Wong's offences were serious and highlighted the multiple sexual occasions.

However, she noted that it was "heartening" that Wong was "quite clear and determined in seeking necessary professional help".

Under the Children and Young Persons Act, anyone convicted of sexual exploitation can be jailed up to two years and fined S$5,000.

In the case of a second conviction, the maximum sentence is four years' jail and S$10,000 fine.

For having sex with an underage girl, Wong could also be jailed up to 10 years and fined.
